As my husband and I were presented with a surprise gift of a night at the Colwick Hall Hotel for his birthday, we didn't know really what to expect. However, it turned out to be a lovely experience. We arrived at lunchtime and went into the elegant dining room to eat, and although the menu is mostly for "snack" type of meals at lunchtime, (I had Welsh rarebit and my husband had Goats cheese tart) it was most enjoyable, a pity though that we were the only people in there. We put this down to being a Monday, but found our room to be quite breath-taking - there is an old-fashioned elegance to the rooms, ours was the Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart room and was as large and roomy as our bungalow that we live in almost! Beautifully decorated and furnished in a very "old-worlde" way, I've read some of the reviews that put it as shabby, but we certainly didn't find this. The bed was huge and very ornate, as was the rest of the furnishings and the bathroom was also huge, with a large claw bath in the centre of the room. All in all we were very impressed, especially with the wonderful view we had over the front of the hotel and gardens. The hotel itself is very ornate and elegant, the only two words I can think of to describe it. Indeed I almost felt like Scarlett O'Hara on descending the huge stone staircase. I would have loved to have swept down in a long rustling gown haha. The features in the hotel are all original and some might call them "old-fashioned and shabby" but we think this all added to it's sheer sophistication, the hall itself being over a hundred years old. I would think our American friends would find it all delightful. Unfortunately we were the only ones dining again that evening, which was a shame, but the food was great, large portions and very tasty. Most of the extremely pleasant and helpful staff are Malaysian (and I tasted my first gin sling from Singapore, yummy) and they were very attentive. The head chef though was actually English and came out for a few words with us and told us that in the next few weeks the restaurant is having a complete makeover and change of menu, which at the present has a Malaysian theme, he was very enthusiastic about this and we told him how much we were enjoying our food, just a shame that there wasn't more company. Anyway after a pleasant evening (even though we were on our own) and a very good nights sleep in the extremely comfortable bed, we came down to an excellent, very well cooked breakfast, with obviously all fresh ingredients, couldn't fault it. All in all we found the experience at the Colwick Hall really enjoyable. I'm not sure of the price structure as it was a gift from family, but I do believe they have some good offers available and we certainly wouldn't hesitate to go again, but take more company with us ! Apparently weddings are very popular here and I'm sure the wedding parties wouldn't be disappointed with the lovely surroundings, beautifully laid tables and extreme comfort. A big yes from us !
