“Sumptious splendour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

As my husband and I were presented with a surprise gift of a night at the Colwick Hall Hotel for his birthday, we didn't know really what to expect. However, it turned out to be a lovely experience. We arrived at lunchtime and went into the elegant dining room to eat, and although the menu is mostly for "snack" type of meals at lunchtime, (I had Welsh rarebit and my husband had Goats cheese tart) it was most enjoyable, a pity though that we were the only people in there. We put this down to being a Monday, but found our room to be quite breath-taking - there is an old-fashioned elegance to the rooms, ours was the Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart room and was as large and roomy as our bungalow that we live in almost! Beautifully decorated and furnished in a very "old-worlde" way, I've read some of the reviews that put it as shabby, but we certainly didn't find this. The bed was huge and very ornate, as was the rest of the furnishings and the bathroom was also huge, with a large claw bath in the centre of the room. All in all we were very impressed, especially with the wonderful view we had over the front of the hotel and gardens. The hotel itself is very ornate and elegant, the only two words I can think of to describe it. Indeed I almost felt like Scarlett O'Hara on descending the huge stone staircase. I would have loved to have swept down in a long rustling gown haha. The features in the hotel are all original and some might call them "old-fashioned and shabby" but we think this all added to it's sheer sophistication, the hall itself being over a hundred years old. I would think our American friends would find it all delightful. Unfortunately we were the only ones dining again that evening, which was a shame, but the food was great, large portions and very tasty. Most of the extremely pleasant and helpful staff are Malaysian (and I tasted my first gin sling from Singapore, yummy) and they were very attentive. The head chef though was actually English and came out for a few words with us and told us that in the next few weeks the restaurant is having a complete makeover and change of menu, which at the present has a Malaysian theme, he was very enthusiastic about this and we told him how much we were enjoying our food, just a shame that there wasn't more company. Anyway after a pleasant evening (even though we were on our own) and a very good nights sleep in the extremely comfortable bed, we came down to an excellent, very well cooked breakfast, with obviously all fresh ingredients, couldn't fault it. All in all we found the experience at the Colwick Hall really enjoyable. I'm not sure of the price structure as it was a gift from family, but I do believe they have some good offers available and we certainly wouldn't hesitate to go again, but take more company with us ! Apparently weddings are very popular here and I'm sure the wedding parties wouldn't be disappointed with the lovely surroundings, beautifully laid tables and extreme comfort. A big yes from us !

Beautiful location. Booked the room on late rooms.com and had an amazing deal. Hotel is luxurious and the grounds beautiful. Lovely welcoming staff who attended to us like we were the only people staying. Room was special and the full English breakfast was lovely.

Excellent venue and fantastic food, staff were really helpful though day our room was excellent but others that stayed in smaller rooms weren't happy about the price they had to pay overall would recommend this hotel as a venue to a high standard.

There are not enough positive superlatives to describe my continued delight with this hotel. I have been comng here for over 6 years and it never fails to delight.
Superb authentic Indian cuisine, and now recently, a more traditional "British"" menu, but I would recommend the Indian food for the experience of authentic cuisince.
Fantastic, professional and delightful service.
Go for a larger room - majestic and daftly huge bathrooms!
Lovely garden to enjoy Pimms by the river

My wife and I stayed one night in the Captain Francis Light room which was huge and very comfortable indeed. The hotel itself is very old and looks fabulous as you enter the car park and see the fountain at the front of the hotel. Our bathroom was also huge which was very nice too.Fantastic value at only £59 for our room for the night considering it is a very short drive to Nottingham City centre and on the doorstep to the racecourse.Receptionist was very polite.

My husband and I got married at Colwick Hall in May and had an absolutely amazing day.

We would recommend the place as a wedding venue and hotel as both were perfect. The wedding packages available are really reasonable but the service on the day felt like we had paid a lot more.

The venue itself is beautiful with a gorgeous lake behind (great for wedding pictures!) and some lovely gardens. We got married in the grand ball room and it was set up however we wanted. The staff were very flexible with how the room was laid out and got rid of any items we didn't want for the ceremony. They quickly changed the room into the wedding reception and I have to say they made it look amazing. We'd provided some info on how we'd like the tables set etc and they definitely exceeding expectations. It looked incredible!

The food was 5* especially the indian vegetarian option they prepared, all the guests fed back how nice it was and how good the service was too. Our duty manager was fantastic, the day ran really smoothly without us even noticing...perfect.

The hotel itself was very comfortable and the staff were very accommodating to our families, even arranging a private breakfast the day after the wedding. They were flexible with check out times and the receptionist Sam went all out to make sure the accommodation was set up how we wanted.

Really would recommend the hotel as a wedding venue, the day couldn't have been any better.

Room Tip: All the rooms are lovely and we actually preferred some of our families rooms to the honeymoon suite...
