Colwick Hall is a wonderful house in a beautiful setting but could do with some attention and making good.
The room itself was a lovely sized room with an apparently king size bed and the tiniest window imaginable, complete with a blind that was broken and unable to be retracted, thus making the room extremely dark indeed with no natural light.
The bathroom was a fabulous size with his and hers sinks, a toilet, bidet and a bath with shower. However upon arrival there were three hairs to be found, one on the bath and two on the surround. Even after cleaning the following day, one of the hairs still remained. The tiling and grouting needed to be attended to pretty urgently as it was quite nasty. Some floor tiles were also cracked and broken.
The biggest disappointment of all was the bed. We had been looking forward to a king size bed and what we actually got were two single beds pushed together. Sadly they didn't fit together very well and the result was terrible backache the following morning.
The bar was unattended on arrival, but someone soon came to attend once alerted by Reception. The bar and restaurant area was very nice, but service was sometimes a little sporadic. The carpet was also rather ill-fitting and really could do with being straightened out.
When checking in we would happily have paid extra to upgrade but were not offered that option which was a little disappointing, as was having to struggle up two flights of stairs with our luggage and then play find the room as no one offered to carry our bags or show us to the room.
Overall, the biggest let down for us was the bed and the poor nights sleep it gave. The rooms, whilst large, are still the old servants' quarters so there is no view at all and hardly any light. What could be a lovely experience is marred somewhat by the tiredness of the bathroom tiling and the fact that clearly the rooms are not thoroughly cleaned. The writing paper had not been refreshed for some time as evidenced by leaving it open to see the scrawl written on it by a previous guest and finding it later covered over by a brochure as it was when we arrived.
Even on checking out we were not asked how our stay was or we should have provided honest feedback. All in all, if the bed were better and the room brighter, we would be happy to stay again as the staff we met were friendly and courteous. Maybe a little more attention to detail would not go amiss.
Try to avoid the servants' quarters, the windows are extremely poor and any light blocked by bot...
