A good way to spend a day walking inside the hall and also outdoor with its lovely garden and deer park.

“Beautiful hall, picturesque grounds... Strange concept!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2012 via mobile

The hall and grounds of this Tudor mansion are without a doubt stunning. The detail of the exterior is fantastic with intricate carvings and features. The interior is in some parts beautiful and in keeping with the exterior. The great hall and salon and dining room in particular are nicely done and the staircases are very sounded with their painted walls and ceilings... However if you are a fan of stately home interiors... You'll be disappointed unless you go on the behind the scenes tours which you pay extra for. Sadly we missed these tours as they only happen at certain times of the day.

The rest of the house has been turned into a kind of natural history museum... Which, don't get me wrong, is very interesting but if you are not a fan of taxidermy and prefer to see things that are supposed to be alive actually living, I would suggest you visit a zoo or safari park. The old Lords who used to own this property certainly liked killing things and stuffing them! There's even a full sized giraffe!! If you don't mind more than a few stuffed animals, insects and creepy crawlies then you'll probably appreciate it a bit more.

The cafe looked nice but there were too many people and not enough tables so we took a trip into Nottingham to the olde trip to jerusalem for dinner instead... Which was well worth a visit.

The grounds are very beautiful and open. Make sure you go round the whole of the gardens though especially round the back because they are lovely.

The best thing about this place is it is FREE to get in. You only have to pay for parking which is cheap at £2 for 3 hours! If you can find a side street to park on or walk/bus it... It's COMPLETELY FREE!!! which means amazing value for the family in these cash strapped times :)

Well worth a visit especially in a sunny day :)

“Wonderful house and deer park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

What a wonderful place to visit. Beautiful grounds welcome you with the added attraction of the deer herd. They are everywhere and so fascinating they are quite used to people and will graze happily whilst being watched. The house is amazing and is a very interesting museum . Lovely lake and an amazing greenhouse. There is a wonderful cafe offering a good variety of hot and cold food. The gift shops are full of souvenirs and are worth a look.the staff were very helpful and pleasant when being served in the cafe and shop. There is also a wonderful old beam engine that was in steam when we visited and a selection of huts selling cakes and handbags and craft type items. Wonderful day out. Take a picnic if weather good. Visit cafe if not. There is no fee to enter but there is a nominal car park charge Had great day out.
