“fantastic food - unstuffy atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2014

Just home (over 3hrs away!) from a fantastic lunch at the chef's table. We loved the friendly relaxed atmosphere of a busy working restaurant where we were served by the chefs, including Sat, who talked to us about the food. Some courses were mind-blowingly different,(chicken meusli) some foraged locally,(horseradish ice cream and nettle soup) some wonderfully "deconstructed" (pear franzipane) and some just luxuriously unctuous (lamb shoulder, kidney and shallots) All delicious!
It was great to eat overlooking the chefs at work in the kitchen and not be surrounded by other guests. Top tip - order coffee to try the 5 digestif chocolates served in a log!

We enjoyed dinner and an overnight stay in room three. Despite living in Nottingham for many years this was our first visit to Sat Bains. The drive to the restaurant through an industrial estate seems a little unlikely but the location did not detract from our experience at all. We were warmly welcomed at reception with a gooey chocolate brownie before being shown to our room. We liked the thoughtful touches: fresh milk on the tea tray (and a jug left outside for morning), home-made cookies, scented candles and an umbrella. The only slightly disappointing feature was the bathroom, which was perfectly adequate but small and a little lacking in luxury. The functional shower curtain rather spoiled the look of the free standing bath and the plumbing was visible when sitting on the toilet. However the bedroom was elegant and luxurious with a very comfortable bed.

We ordered pre-dinner drinks in the bar area and found service throughout to be faultless: the staff managed to attend promptly to all our needs in an unobtrusive manner which is a hard balance to strike.

The food was wonderful – each course was so carefully crafted and the waiting staff were very knowledge about everything we ate. The sheer ‘umami-ness’ was amazing and we liked referring to the table menu while eating to understand the different taste components of each course. We started with the poached duck egg as an extra course followed by an amuse bouche named after the restaurant postcode and sourced from ingredients growing locally: the horse radish ice cream sandwich and nettle soup with horse radish custard was surprising, tasty and palate cleansing. The ten course tasting menu then followed: we enjoyed scallops and roe deer but a surprising highlight was the celeriac course: served three ways (pickled, salt baked and pureed with truffle butter) it elevated this simple root vegetable to a new level. We liked the rack of cutlery allowing you to select your preferred utensils for each course without worrying whether you had used the intended implements. The quantity of food was more than adequate for anyone with a normal appetite. It was more a food performance in ten acts than a meal and certainly not one we will forget.

Breakfast served in the conservatory was delicious – we appreciated the fresh orange juice, the crumpets, home made preserve and traditional full English with black pudding.

In conclusion it was a wonderful experience and a memorable way to celebrate a special occasion. We hope to return soon.

This would have been a 5* review based on our stay and meal, the room was extremely comfortable and the food and service was exceptional. They even went to the effort of placing on the table a single menu which had the tasting menu and the veggy menu on one sheet so we could see what we were having and where the crossover was. Food was stunning, as a baking geek I was also
very impressed with the quality of bread.

The reason for 4 stars was on checkout they forgot to get the key of us, about 2 hours later we recieved a phonecall and the attitude on the phone was very rude, despite being 90 min away they wanted us to get the key to them, I was gobsmacked that a hotel would not have a spare and even more shocked at the accusational tone of an innocent mistake and that they would be charging me for the cost of them getting thier joiner to break their door and the cost of replacing the lock. Once I raised this concern they "found" a spare and I was also passing nottingham that night, so I went out of my way to return the key. Again face to face they where much more friendly and I can only assume the earlier incident on the phone was due to the staff panicing.

In short I would return because of the food but I hope they consider the impact of how they interact when things go wrong.

We stayed at Restaurant Sat Bains earlier this week and it was just as good as we had been expecting. We were greeted by friendly, welcoming staff and taken to our lovely room to freshen up before the main event...the seven course tasting menu! Seven courses became nine because we just couldn't resist the famous duck egg or the cheese course.Everything was perfect from the amazing horseradish ice cream to the delicious scallop and delightful salmon. The salt baked roots were a revelation and the lamb was simply sublime. The cross over 'lollipop' was a real 'wow' moment and the Tiramisu sheer genius. The waiting staff were friendly and professional without being intrusive. The somelier was extremely knowledgeable and helpful and the wine pairings were spot on.
After a good night's sleep in a very comfortable bed in a quiet room we had an excellent breakfast in the conservatory. Unfortunately we didn't get to see Junior and Biscuit (the rabbits) in the courtyard. All in all it was a fantastic food experience and one which will live on in our memories for a long time. The only thing I would change would be the tea at breakfast. We like our 'builders' strong enough to trot a mouse across!
Many thanks to Sat and his team for a wonderful stay.

It's hard to put into words how special the Sat Bains experience is. Exquisite, welcoming, incredible, friendly, tasteful, - everyone has already said it. Sat and Amanda have a knack though of really making you feel Ike their guest and making you feel the centre of attention even though the restaurant is full. We decided to treat ourselves with a suite (room7) and the 10 course tasting menu plus the duck egg - nothing disappointed. The attention to detail, the lovely staff, the comfy bed all made this a trulymemorable experience

We have visited Sat & Amanda many times, however sadly due to business, we have not enjoyed their hospitality for some time. We always support local and recommend their Restaurant to our many Guests. The food chats that we have had from our Guests, after their visit, has urged us to return.
We visited at Lunch and we were warmly welcomed to the Chef Table, seated just outside of the working kitchen. A new and impressive experience for us. The Team are faultless in their approach and service. The dinning experience is over and above that accomplished in many Restaurants that could claim to compete with Sat. Sat & his Team of Chefs have inviting knowledge about the local produce that is sourced for their dishes and they are keen to demonstrate this in their exchange conversation. You will encounter a relaxing, skilled and impressionable memory, that will head you in the direction of this Restaurant for many years to come. Thank you to Sat, Amanda, John, Thom, Jordan, Niall, Harry & Team.

We stayed one night as part of the 10 course tasting menu package, booking into the suite (room 7). Some of rooms, including the suite, are across a small courtyard from the main restaurant in a single-storey brick building. Keep an eye out for the owners' lovely pet rabbits, which are allowed to roam in the daytime for some exercise. The suite comprised of an entrance hall, dressing room and walk-in wardrobe, bathroom, living room and bedroom.

The suite was very tastefully decorated - chocolate browns, thick carpets and leather sofas, lots of cushions, all set off by low table lamps. A decent TV was on the wall, iPod docking radio in the bedroom, free wi-fi and another stereo in the living room. The overall impression was luxurious and comfortable. We also had a decent tea-tray with a selection of teas, biscuits and sweets, together with a jug of fresh milk. The bed was huge and comfortable.

All in all, very good quality accommodation. The only slight downside is a noisy front door to the block we stayed in, which people have a tendency to slam loudly at random times. But a minor gripe. No noise whatsoever from the flyover which is literally a stones throw from the place.

Room Tip: Suite 7 was lovely...
