“Great for Art, Great for Food and Drinks”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

Nottingham finally has a place of culture! I love nothing more than taking visiting friends here for a potter around followed by a nice spot of lunch or a drink. Big thumbs up!

“pleasant surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

I didn't know this place existed, what a nice surprise! The next surprise was that it's free and has something for everyone.
Yes there's a shop and it is dear BUT it's no big deal when you get such quality for free. No one puts pressure on you to buy anything.
I'd go again.

“Pleasant visit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

A free contemporary art gallery in an interesting modern green and gold building in the centre of Nottingham. Displays were not particularly to our taste when we were there, though. However this may not be the same for everyone. There is a good shop and cafe, though both were quite expensive. We didn't have a lot to eat and it was busy on a wet Sunday, but there did seem to be some confusion with other people's orders. Heard them offering people their money back!
As its free, got to be worth dropping into though, if you are passing!

“A lovely day out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

Just popped in today to see the local nottingham artist John Newling. Had a great time with the exhibits and a show I would recommend to all. While we were there we visited the Cafe downstairs. The cakes and food on display looked lovely, we had a nice apple crumble cake with a mulled wine topping - highly recommended. The service was also excellent, a lovely chap who explained all about the local castle rock ales that they have on offer. I must say an extremely pleasant end to a lovely trip to the gallery. Well worth a visit.

“Art for everyone for free -Haitian Art & Vodou”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012

I should have done this way before now, to sing the praises of Nottingham Contemporary, now three years old. Its a fantastic example of the re-use of former central industrial sites, in this case situated in Nottingham's famous Lace Market area. Its an unusual square green building which at first site looks as if its constructed of green corrugated plastic, but do look closer, the texture of the surface looks like lace- brillant.
It also has a tram stop, so access is easy. You can feel the trams coming and going as you sit in the basement cafe, a good place to eat & drink, although the service isn't always friendly.
I think this building is Nottingham's answer to the Sydney Opera House; stylistically it looks out of place, and yet somehow it seems just right- a bold statement attracting both attention and justifiably many visitors. Inside its cavernous and a wonderful place to go to view art exhibitions. The current one is devoted to Haitian art, and uses the spacious interior to the fullest.
I think this exhibition is the best I've seen at the Contemporary, demonstrating both vibrant paintings, sculptures, and amazing bead-working, along with films of artists at work, which set outputs in the context of poverty, struggles and politics. You'll need more than a couple of hours to view this exhibition. The free information booklets about the displays provide useful explanations and serve as a reminder of an uplifting experience.
