“A Bit Dissapointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2013

My wife had won a free night at this hotel when at the Hilton Watford (where we live) at a charity ball for the children`s ward at Watford General Hospital. We decide to use this up on our return to Watford from Kinloss (nr Elgin) after visiting son and grandkids on 21st Dec. After a long and not that pleasant a journey we found the hotel but not how to get to the entrance. Even a local taxi driver couldn`t give me directions. So eventually driving down a bus only section of road got us to the hotel entrance. We were greeted in the forecourt to be asked if we had booked parking. As we hadn`t been told that booking was required when we phoned there was no space for us. After depositing the wife and luggage I was then directed to the multi story car park opposite. As there were several parties taking place that night we were put in a room on the 6th floor that is reserved for "honours" guests. The room was very large but with the smallest double bed I`ve had in any hotel. Also to get to the 6th floor required taking the lift to the 5th, going through several doors to a staircase, slightly inconvenient.
The restaurant is a Nicholsens american themed (supposedly). The menu was very very limited to say the least. Even though our winning package included evening meal and breakfast I was sorely tempted to eat out.
The good things about this hotel were the staff who were very friendly and helpful and the location.

Stayed here with my husband while visiting to see the Cirque de Soleil. On arrival there was no booking, even though I had booking confirmation printed out. They proceeded to say there were no rooms available. Offered to transfer us to another hotel. Did not fancy trekking across town as I am disabled. They then miraculously found a room for us but stated it was a standard double not the king sized we had originally booked (even though they said they said they could not find it), They offered it at our booking price as we had got a special deal. They also offered to pay for a taxi to and from the Capital FM arena and give us complimentary drinks. We decided to stay put and take up the offer, wish we hadn't now. The room was small, dated and had seen better days. The bathroom had a wonky toilet seat which needed fixing and the hum from the heating was annoying. The taxi to the venue was fine, no costs involved, however on the return we found we were unable to book the taxi, even though we were given the number, because we did not have the hotel password to put it on their account. We has to ring the hotel and get them to book it as they don't give out the password for obvious reasons. When finally picked up, on arriving at the hotel we were asked for £1.80 towards the journey costs as apparently the hotel only pay £2. This is obviously not the case as the outwards journey was more than £2 and we did not pay anything. The taxi driver was insistent and to shut him up we paid the money. The breakfast was okay. No decaf coffee available even though they had sachets in the room and took a while for the juice to arrive. One waitress was very nice and helpful, the rest just couldn't be bothered. Would not stay here again. Was expecting a nice stay for a Christmas treat but was disapointed.

We stayed here for one night only as a family of five, we were given interconnecting rooms which was great. The rooms were both very large, one having a large kingsize and sofa bed, the other a twin with sofa bed, all were very comfy and clean, The bathrooms were large and big fluffy towels, the only thing missing was a hair dryer. There was a lot of outside noise but then you are in a city centre, but it did not disturb our sleep even though we are from a very quiet Norfolk town. The staff were really helpful, and eating in at the night time were delighted to find the children ate free with a 3 course meal excellent for familys. Breakfast was included which was buffet style was good hot and plentiful. There a pool but didnt have time to use it, but looked great. Will certainly stay again when in Nottingham .

Room Tip: we stayed at front of hotel which were noisey, but uit didnt disterb our sleep

Stayed at this hotel for 1 night to attend a concert. The room is very tiny, bed is small, not comfortable and you can hear everything through the walls... So couldn't sleep a bit!
The only good thing about this hotel is the concierge: very polite, nice and helpful guy.

QI usually try to be fair and generous with my feedback on hotels, but on this occasion I am really struggling. Like my last review I arrived at this hotel late so only saw reception, my room, room service and breakfast. It is really hard to be positive about any but in fairness let me start with reception. Finding your way to this hotel is problematic, and in the end I had to telephone for directions. The young guy - Hayden on reception, who I later met at check in was a star. He gave very clear instructions, knew his stuff and his directions were spot on. He was efficient and friendly at check and apologised that they stop serving food in the bar and restaurant at 21:30.

My company have paid a lot of money for an event at the hotel the day following my stay, so I was a little surprised to be given such a poor quality room. I had thought about taking photographs of all that was wrong with the room but in the end, simply ran out of time. The room is 308. The floor boards creak so it is impossible to move without noise. The carpets are stained especially by the bathroom door. Looking for a socket by the bed discovered that dusting is not undertaken and found dust and a tea bag. Decided not to look any further. The curtains have hooks missing so just look a message. There is a chunk missing from the front of the bedside locker - looks like someone has taken a bite.

The two single beds have a hardwood base - ie not springs or a divan. The mattresses do not fit so each time you move by the end of the bed you clock your legs on the frame. The pillow case on one of the beds has holes in it.

Room service - first a five pound charge per tray - outrageous. Fish and chips = £13, soaking in oil with no taste of figs or potato, just oil. Fresh fruit platter = £5, one Apple sliced, three blackberries, one segment of orange and couple of chunks of melon.

To add to the tale of woe the Ironing board was broken and the iron did not work.

Breakfast, was positive with staff who seemed genuinely interested in what they we're doing. They were busy but attentive and on top of keeping the process flowing.

Finally, Wifi - available but chargeable - outrageous.

Overall not impressed and disappointed that the Hilton has let itself slip to this level - not what you expect from the brand.

Room Tip: Avoid room 308 but unless it improves, stay somewhere else.

I've stayed in lots of Hiltons but none compare to this one.

The sheets were dirty and room was dusty and generally not very clean.

We were moved to a different room, which was at least clean, but the walls were so thin that sleep was difficult. The room was warm with no apparent way to turn heating down.

Breakfast was nice and staff friendly and welcoming, but the state of the rooms let the hotel down and I wouldn't recommend it.
