While in Nottingham on business, I booked myself into the Hotel Britannia, but unfortunately, a heavy rain storm flooded the property, damaging several rooms. The Britannia staff took the initiative of booking me into the Strathdon, which is how I ended up in one of the worst hotels of my long and storied travel career.
The room, which smelled like a family of cats lived in it, was tiny even by European standards. Indeed, there was maybe a ten foot walkway from the door to the wall, and that was about the extent of the floor space the room afforded.
A desk on one side and a tiny bed on the other marked the extent of the room's furnishings. If the bedding—at least the top sheet and quilt—had been washed in the past few years, I would be stunned.
Thankfully, the TV offered three or four stations to watch, otherwise I would have had to spend the evening working out what shapes the massive stain on the floor might resemble.
The filthy carpet matched the bath towels perfectly. One of them boasted a gigantic golden stain. And that's all I'll say about that.
I tried to get some late night food, but they're not equipped for that and instead I dined on the packet of biscuits on the desk.
On the plus side, the hotel staff were quite pleasant. Also, the location is relatively central; I walked from the hotel to the train station, which took me about 20-25 minutes.
Short of some sort of zombie apocalypse, I can't conceive any combination of circumstances that would ever see me returning to the Strathdon.
