“A Must when in Hexham”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2013

Recently had my first visit to the Abbey. It is stunning. The alters and windows are beautiful. We were lucky that someone was playing the organ when we visited and it really added to the atmosphere. The crypt is fascinating and the guide was really informative. Its fabulous to see the ancient roman stonework. Donations are asked for which is reasonable. The wood work of the pews has to be seen. If the seats are down, tilt them up and see the work on the underneath of them. Its fabulous workmanship. Unfortunately the Tower Tours were really busy but that just gives me an excuse to pay a return visit sometime. There was a refreshment area set up when we visited but I don't know if this is the norm and I can't comment on toilet facilities as we didn't need them.

“extraordinary and ancient”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2013

can't remember having been in such an ancient church that is still a fully functioning community and place of worship. our daughter loved the children's corner at the back which meant we were able to wander around and wonder at the 13th century staircase, wonderful art and stained glass and soak up the atmosphere.

This is a lovely Abbey and is beautiful inside. The windows are amazing and I would love to have heard some music in the Abbey. It is well maintained and very interesting from a historical perpective

“Best medieval vibe in Britain”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

Working church with many of the medieval features still intact including a Bishop's throne and a Roman tombstone.
Don't miss the crypt with the reused Roman inscriptions, but mind the steps!

“Beautiful place, full of history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

This ancient abbey is well worth a visit.Be sure to pick up one of the excellent leaflets available at the entrance, as they give an excellent, informative self-guided tour to this very interesting building. It is full of history-a fascinating place!
The Abbey gift shop nextdoor is also well worth a visit....I got 3 early Christmas presents here!
