Owner description: Lying in magnificent countryside next to a sweeping section of Hadrian's Wall and based at the site of Carvoran Roman Fort, the Roman Army Museum is an authentic and dramatic tribute to Rome’s extraordinary military legacy. Step into the life of a Roman soldier and experience life on the front line of Emperor Hadrian’s formidable British frontier. Explored through reconstructions, objects excavated along Hadrian's Wall and the Vindolanda Trust’s inspiring interpretations of army life including the exclusive 3D Edge of Empire film, the museum pays unforgettable homage to Rome's military accomplishments in Britain.

“Only worth it if you're visiting with Vindolanda”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

I definitely wouldn't have paid to just see this exhibition but it was interesting as part of our trip to Vindolanda. There are some good parts of the building and a couple of interactive parts which are suitable for children. We took my father here and he loved the Roman history. The film they show is a highlight of the museum and a nice escape from the rain. You don't have to visit both Vindolanda and the museum on the same day which is a definite plus but it is easy to do both in one day.

“Good find on a wet old day”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

I wasn't really too interested in going to a museum but it was a good alternative to driving aimlessly in the rain. I was very surprised, the museum is very well done with a 20 minute film about Hadrians wall and the Romans who guarded it. Lots of information and displays, it is really very well done. Good for children but interesting for adults too.

Sorry to hear you were unsatisfied with your visit to the Roman Army Museum. At the Roman Army Museum the emphasis is placed on life on the wall during the roman occupation, and life in the Roman army with educational audio visuals and the award winning 3D film - "Edge of Empire".
Roman Vindolanda (Our sister site) has the largest collection of leather in the roman empire among thousands of artefacts including the writing tablets, all excavated from the fort and vicus at VIndolanda. During the summer, excavations are ongoing, so visitors can witness the artefacts being uncovered.
We believe that the combination of both museums offers a great educational and entertaining day out.
I hope you are able to visit Vindolanda in the future.
