Roman Vindolanda Fort is near a tinkling stream, whose mystical properties must have been revered by humans well before any Romans came there as conquerors. I was working as a volunteer excavator, helping to uncover the south-eastern quadrant of the Fort - click here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri4I6V3c-vA. The cafe supplied hot soup, a cream tea and a friendly chat with the enthusiastic staff; the walk across the bridge over the stream refueled my spirits. I spent two hours in each of the museums (Vindolanda Fort near Bardon Mill, Army Museum at Carvoran near Greenhead) absorbing the vibrant portrayal of life what life during the Roman occupation. Bring: walking boots, water-proof / wind-proof clothing, camera. I would recommend spending 2 hours walking the excavation, 2 hours in each of the museums. However much time you spend you'll want to return.
