Owner description: Visit Roman Vindolanda today and you will find one of the North East’s most famous and not to be missed tourist attractions lying in the beautiful landscape of Hadrian's Wall Country. Formerly a key military post on the northern frontier of Britain, Vindolanda is the home of Britain's 'Top Treasure' - the Vindolanda Writing Tablets - and is one Europe's most important Roman archeological sites, with live excavations taking place every year. The recently fully refurbished on site museum provides a breathtaking exploration of the Trust's ongoing discoveries and accounts of Roman life. There are no other places on earth where it is possible to experience Roman Britain, Hadrian's Wall and history coming to life before your very eyes all in one space! Come and explore it for yourself and find out why Vindolanda is treasured worldwide.

“Take a guided tour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

Very interesting, we visted on a cold wet day, but still enjoyed the visit. We had a free guided tour without the tour we could have looked at a pile of bricks, the guide brought it to life and made it. As Roman forts go this was a good one, the 'vindalanda tablets a bit disapointing.

“A world apart”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012 via mobile

What can you say about this place. If you have any interest in history, it is a must see! Not just the fact that the only writing tablets were found here but the museum has artefacts that actually existed, so a must see.

The guide was excellent giving a clear, interesting and easy to follow outline of life in the fort. A balance was given to different ways of interpreting what had been unearthed in the digs.

“Interesting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

The vastness of the dig is surprising, it's a Roman fort and the surrounding township. We visited in October and the cafe is shutting down for the winter, even though it was operating. Most of the menu wasn't available. Also it's right at the back of the dig, long walk to get to it. Somehow this wasn't as exciting as standing on the Wall itself. Though it is a very important archeological site.

“Well worth the visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

I last visited Hadrian's Wall in 1989 and since our visit was brief, never had a chance to see Vindolanda. It is impressive. We got to see an active dig, and at the bottom of the hill there was a charming garden and a very nice gift shop. Well worth it for the history buffs
