“Fabulous evening”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2012

I booked this trip some time ago as my partner is a very enthusiastic stargazer, and, living in the city, we don't have much opportunity to see a lot of the night sky. We have also just purchased a telescope so thought this would be a good opportunity to use it. We weren't disappointed!

The Director of the observatory and his volunteers made us very welcome, and we enjoyed a talk around the Aurora which was a slight change in schedule due to a previously booked speaker not being able to attend. We weren't disappointed however. We did think that we wouldn't be able to see much of the night sky due to the weather, but as the night progressed, the clouds disappeared, and we saw the milky way in all its glory, and also had a chance to look through the telescopes (which I have to say, put ours to shame!).

This is well worth a visit, and even those, like me, who don't have an extensive knowledge of this subject, will enjoy it. Would definitely return.

“fantastic place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

my husband and I visited the observatory on Tuesday evening although the cloudy skies were a disappointment at first then the clouds disappeared and we had a beautiful cloud free sky to observe the moon and stars and some planets. We had fantastic time and Gary is a very knowledgeable man with a passion for his work.We would definitely pay another visit when in the area as we were given lots of things to think about regarding "our planet" and "our universe "
well done for being able to share your knowledge with us we feel very honoured.........

“Big Universe - 31st August 2012”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

Myself and my son visyed the observatoy last night , the weather was awful so we were unable to view the sky with the telescopes. The talk however was captivating and thought provoking -- fantastic evening, just imagine what it would of been like with clear skies! We were on holiday in the area but are contemplating a future trip from North Wales in the future just to visit the observatory again. So wish we lived closer!

“A Special Evening”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012 via mobile

This was a spur of the moment booking a week before our long-planned trip to Northumberland and turned out to be the highlight.
The mostly voluntary team have got so very many things right. A beautiful building in a glorious setting and passion for & knowledge of a subject communicated engagingly.
We were fortunate and cloudy skies cleared for the final hour when true dark skies began. The team stayed much later than the advertised finish time letting the visitors who remained take advantage of the weather and skies.
The only downside was that a computer glitch meant it was significantly overbooked which led to less telescope time than there would otherwise have been. And as a total amateur this meant I struggled to see much as it took quite a while 'to get my eye in' and there was generally a big queue of people waiting behind you. But it was a genuine mistake and the team did everything they could to give all a great experience regardless.
This is a wonderful place, with a vision to bring the wonder of the universe to all regardless of knowledge, background and physical ability. It should be backed to the hilt.
