“A relaxing way to spend the afternoon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2011

I had been meaning to visit for some time, but the reduced opening hours had to date prevented me from doing so. However, the warm sun of the end of September tempted me out and I was glad I did so.

In September the gardens and house are only open on Thursdays from 2-5:30pm. I didn't visit the house, but spent the afternoon wandering around the gardens and relaxing amongst the trees.

It may not be the largest of gardens, but it is laid out in such a way that you are constantly tempted into the next area or through the next gate or gap in the hedge. There are numerous 'rooms' within the garden, some more formal than others, but all with plenty of places to sit and view the garden.

There is also a wild garden through which a small river runs, and, in which I did see a fox. On the way to this garden you must walk across a road that is lined with horse chestnuts which looked fantastic in the autumn sun. However, the main reason that I fell in love with the place is that you feel pretty much free to wander amongst the trees whereas, in some gardens they often feel a little fenced off and out of bounds. At Cottesbrooke there a seats under the trees and worn pathways across to them - it is positively encouraged to site under them!

There is also a small cafe serving tea, coffee and cake - service was friendly, prices reasonable and cake lovely.

I may be back next year.

“A hidden Northamptonshire Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2011

Queen Anne house set in HHA/Christie's Garden of the Year Award. There is a 45 minutes guided tour of the house which contains many fine (mainly equine) paintings by Stubbs, Marshall and Munnings. The gardens have individually planted 'rooms'.
