Description: Situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, The Wensleydale Heifer may be within easy reach of the A1 and M6 but it still feels totally rural. A traditional white-washed inn complete with leaded lights and swinging sign, The Wensleydale Heifer gives the visitor a real flavour of Britain meaning its popular not only with locals but with tourists searching for the real Yorkshire. From the lounge, with its comfortable leather settees, country pursuit paintings and imposing fireplace through to the wicker seating, beamed ceilings and eau de nil painted walls, the interior could have leapt from the pages of Country Homes magazine. The contemporary British menu includes seaood from across Britain plus locally sourced meat and veg, all prepared using the Wensleydale Heifer philosophy keep it simple.

“Good food in wonderful setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013 via mobile

I could tell with in minutes of arriving there were clear comparisons to the Crab and Lobster, we were greater seated and given menus, once taken through the restaurant was fitted well and we were made to feel comfortable, food was good if a little safe, ingredients were good and dishes had been prepared with skill, portions were very big and I felt over full when leaving, I did feel like I was dinning in a pub with the food and service, friendly and warm as a posed to professional and knowledgeable. Will return and will stay, can not fault but didn't wow

“Finest dining, top menu, awesome night”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

We stayed in the Heifer hotel which was fantastic but the restaurant was so impressive it deserves its own review. We dined from the a la carte menu but I understand there are bar and lunch menus as well. The choice was excellent, though I was a little worried that most of the dishes were fish, I managed to find a meaty option which did not disappoint. The starters were delicate, not too filling, I ordered a chicken liver terrine which was light and came with plenty of chutney and salad then a steak which was cooked exactly to my liking and came with potatoes and veg accompaniments which complimented the dish perfectly. The restaurant was fairly busy for a Sunday evening but with a quiet and relaxed atmosphere. The menu initally looked quite expensive but when we saw the quality of the food and the flavours the chef had managed to bring to each dish, plus excellent presentation this meal was worth every penny. We don't go in for pretentious dining but this was exactly the right mix, special but not self-obsessed. My only regret is that we were too full for dessert, a couple on the next table ordered a sharing dessert which consisted of a mini portion of everything - it looked AMAZING, and he was taking pictures so I wouldn't be surprised if they end up on tripadvisor! Coffee was served with home made truffles which were divine. I could not have asked for a better experience, this place is great and welcoming and we will certainly be back!

“Seafood perfection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

Quite unsurpassed for quality and service. The signature sharing platter as a starter is enough for a whole meal so choose a main course wisely. The house wine selection is very good. There is nothing to fault, we have nothing but praise for this restaurant.

“Superb food, excellent service, comfortable surroundings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

Caught up with our friends for lunch, and have to say that I was very impressed. No rush, no pressure, time for us to catch up without being pestered for our order. Had a pint of the Wensleydale beer, and if you like real ale, its absolutely spot on. The reception area was warm and welcoming, with a lovely wood burning stove providing the heat. We were shown to our table and were served what appeared to be home made bread rolls. Nice selection and very tasty. Rest of the meal was absolutely spot on. The 70's style prawn cocktail was absolutely spot on and one of the best I have ever eaten. Main course and pudding were again really tasty and nicely presented. We had eaten here before, and hoped that it was as good as previous, and I am really happy to say that it was even better!

We had the coffee back in the reception lounge, and once again we wern't hurried or pestered. Cost of the meal was very reasonable for what we had. Only surprise was the decoration in the toilets bit unexpected but quite fun.

All and all, well worth visiting, in a beautiful setting, spot on food and the B&B looks interesting for a break as well. Thoroughly recommended

“A brilliant place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

This was our second stay at the Heifer and I have to say was even better than the first ! We stayed in "a night at the movies" room, absolutely fantastic, fab decor, lovely comfy bed, gorgeous bathroom, and a 40" flat screen 3D tv with plenty of DVD's to chose from. Then we get to the little things that make it just that bit more special - plentiful tea tray, with decent size mugs, fresh milk in a thermos, fruit, flowers and little cakes. The staff were more than helpful and always smiling. The food is to die for, excellent quality with excellent flavours, I can't praise the food enough, you won't be disappointed. There are plenty of choices for breakfast to suit all tastes and if you like a good old english breakfast the black pudding is a winner. We enquired about staying New Years Eve this year, and believe it or not it is already fully booked, we are first reserve !!! that alone speaks volumes.
