“Disappointing experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

Staying for a weekend and wanted somewhere special for dinner and thought this would be good but what a mistake! Starters were ok but had the chateaubriand for mains which was on the small side but good taste and cooked as requested the side of cauliflower cheese was a mess! Watery sauce and mild taste of cheese, the fries were akin to economy brand frozen, not even had made/twice fried etc.

Also made the mistake of not scrutinising the bill and later discovered service charge on the bill and a gratuity left on the table. Overall would not hurry back!

“30th Birthday Celebration”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2013

This was a disappointing evening. The service was incredibly slow - 3 hours to serve 6 of us. The menu was adequate but not outstanding with a limited choice of desserts. On previous visits here we have always enjoyed the food and general atmosphere but this evening (a Saturday) the bistro was not full and the food was very mediocre. Expensive too!!

“Sunday Lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

I am so glad I didn't read these reviews before an ad hoc visit for Sunday Lunch. It was so delicious! Four courses for £19.95 - home made tomato soup; help yourself buffet with choices of oysters, mussels, cured baked salmon, smoked salmon, mackerel pate, various cold salami type sausages, ham terrine, king prawns and other seafood, salads; for main course I chose fish of the day - red snapper - with nice variety of veg; then I chose rhubarb crumble for pud. Service charge was added on top of the bill, but deserved - attentive without being intrusive, and friendly. Beware bar pricing of drinks however, the website and menu shows Bucks Fizz at £7.50 yet in the bar they tried to charge me £9.75 (that's per glass by the way!! exorbitant but very nice). I will definitely go there again, it was probably the best Sunday lunch I have ever had.

“re: Terrible Service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

I booked the Hotel Du Vin York for my sister's hen party afternoon tea for 26 people quite a few months in advance. We booked a private room for a reduced cost of £50 (should have been £200)
The service we received was poor, very disorganised front of house service.
The room itself was lovely and the food (when it actually came) was good. Unfortunately through poor management, and staff not knowing what they were doing, we all ended up only having a choice of two sandwiches per table instead of 5/6. It was unclear (even after asking the waiting on staff) whether we should move the heavy slates (which were served on) around the 3 circle tables.
At this point no management staff were around to guide their staff, until after we went to find them to complain.
On top of all this, we had to share one small teapot between 8 (which only served two people) after asking twice for more teapots/ and then having to ask for more milk we waited a good 10 mins before recieving our milk which I had to go and ask someone again for this and our tea was cold.

Although they catered for Gluten Free member of our party, she was served 2 sandwiches cut into 4 which were just egg (for a lovely price of £16) The state of the bread was inedible.
Also the staff couldn't tell if the scone they were serving was Gluten Free even though it came out on a individual platter (even after being asked twice) she grunted "I don't think so"

After speaking to the manager he quoted "we are very busy in other area's of the hotel" but did apologise although just goes to show their priorities! We had booked months in advanced and were being charged for the room, so we expected a quality service what we got was a shambles.

They did reduce our bill to an nominal amount and waiver the room cost,
but really we would have rather this whole experience had never happened.
I wouldn't recommend this unless they get their act together.
It was really disappointing.
