“Lovely B&B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

Stayed there at the beginning of August with my hubby & another couple for 3 nights The B&B is a lovely old building which has retained some of its features & charm, our room was huge with a lovely big bay window and was very comfortable & clean, the en-suite was a good size, fresh towels daily, and tea/coffee making in the room which was replenished every day The owners we found to be lovely, very helpful & hard working The breakfast was fab, fruit juice, cereals & home made bread with an amazing range of jams, cooked breakfast served to you and as much toast as you want The added bonus is the option of breakfast in bed
There is a resident cat (Kittson) who lounges about & lets you pet him, he's gorgeous, the biggest cat I've ever seen
The B&B is within easy walking distance of the city centre, the race course is at the end of the road, and there is a brilliant chippy that you pass on your way home from the city centre, perfect for when you have the munchies after a night in one of the lovely pubs
The St George's is fantastic value for money & I would absolutely return

Not sure how we stayed in the same place as some of the other reviewers here.

In context we booked at the last minute (Monday for a Thursday stay in middle of summer hols). The parking was very very tight indeed, and limited as explained. We have a volvo estate and could only just (inches to spare) fit in. The owner was polite (it was strained) and let us in, showed us up to Room 1 (pictures below) which we found roomy but dated. It had an enormous TV hemmed in at the end of the single bed (we'd been under the impression we'd booked a double room) and although the room was clean it was packed with furniture. There was a mark on the sheet, and there were mascara marks on the towels, although they were clearly clean and smelled fresh. The sash window opened onto the fire escape and the view was of a caravan and awning set up in the rear garden which was odd.

We paid £69 for a night and felt this was a fair price given the short notice. When I rang to book I was told I had to book it online through booking.com as they had an arrangement with the website. I'd have far preferred booking with the owner and over the phone which is why I'd telephoned.

We slept ok although it was amid a very hot week and no fan was provided despite the scorching temperatures which we'd have appreciated. At breakfast (a multicultural affair - Irish, Japanese, New Zealanders) we enjoyed the food, there was a good sized cooked breakfast, let down a little by the sausage.

We really agonised over how to rate this experience. We've stayed in better places, but didn't want to be harsh on this B&B based on a single night's stay in the height of summer.

Just returned after 3nights stay at this lovely B&B with my partner for my 60th birthday with 2 days at York races ,for those who like the races the coarse is just over the road so ideally situated, with the center of york an easy walk 15 -20 mins away.
How anyone can fault this B&B is beyond belief ,the rooms are spotless ,breakfast is just perfect ,with breakfast in bed friday morning for my birthday a real treat ,tell me how many B&B you can get that service .
As for the owners you could not wish for more helpful ,friendly, hardworking people .
Set in a quiet road there is ample parking ,and the B&b itself at night is very quiet never heard a sound all the time we were there ,mind you i think we were probally last in .
So if you are thinking of a trip to york for any reason you need look know further ,i promise you will not be disappointed ,i shall certainly be returning .
Another tip had a very good italian meal at delirios pricey but well worth it .

We stayed in room 10 and found the room excellent until, next morning pulled the sheet back and there was a dry blood stain bottom right hand corner. My wife slept this side and had no cut grazes or anything else on her feet. I discreetly pointed this out and was almost immediatly blamed for the problem, although they were "horrified" this had happened initially and then promptly put the blame on us.This was dried blood, no stain on top sheet or on mattress. How could it be us. We wrote and they replied, still laying the blame at our door. I was fuming. But have decided not to pursue the matter and will go elsewhere as was suggested by them in their reply. So much for customer satisfaction. Breakfast order was also " lost" .

stayed there on the 15th-18th of August a very friendly little guest house run by a very hard working family the room was very bright, clean and comfortable with tea and coffee making facilities lovely en suite and all you would expect in a good 3/4 star hotel. Breakfast was of good quality and served to you individually(no standing at a dried up buffet in hotel) the host could not do enough for you and made the start to your day a pleasant one, the home made bread was excellent!! if I ever return to York this is where I will stay and book my room direct

a truly wonderful b&b the rooms are well appointed and furnished clean ,decoration is good and fresh the en-suite was very clean ,towels were changed every day and the tea coffee replenished daily (stayed three nights) incredibly comfy bed .The breakfast was tremendous and there was lashings of fresh coffee ,homemade bread very wide selection of jams and preserves ,the cooked breakfasts and variety were beautifully cooked .Although non smoking there was a table chair ash tray in the garden (for guests use). There is a large cat that patrols the ground floor and although i am allergic to them the bedrooms appear to be off limits as i slept without any allergic reactions ,the b&b is only a 10 minute walk from York centre, alternatively there is a bus stop ideally positioned 1 min walk from the b&b think this is main bus route into York

Room Tip: no lift so try to avoid third floor

Lovely little B & B, a short walk from York on a quiet street. The rooms are large & airy, the breakfast great & the owners very friendly & easy going. Kittson (the cat) is a character not to be missed. We will be back!!
