“Cute and Comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

I stayed for 2 nights at The Saxon House and it was a very nice stay. The gentleman that checked my group in was very funny and witty. He was a great start to our stay. He helped us with any of our questions and knew what he was talking about.
The rooms were cute, comfortable and clean. Everyone was able to sleep no problem each night. It had free wifi which is always a nice plus. Location was within walking distance to the downtown core of York and it was an enjoyable walk along the water channel.
There was breakfast served in the mornings and I was very pleased with the food. It was delicious and filling.
The owner of the B&B was personable, she was a nice lady to talk with and she has a great personality. As well you could see that she cares about the people that stays there and wants to make sure everyone enjoys themselves.
If you plan on staying in York please do give this place a try!

We stayed here for the weekend, and greeted by very friendly helpful staff, although we arrived early morning we were able to leave the car in the car park and also checked in at the same time and given the key for when the room was ready later this was a bonus. The guest house is just a short stroll along the riverside into the city. opposite is a great pub serving good food, even better if its raining not far to go!! Ready for some more food an excellent cooked breakfast with good produce. The only small criticism I have is that the mirror in the bedroom is far to high, you cant sit at the desk and do your hair or make up.

I've been going to York nearly every year of my life since a young age, as I have relatives there (in Fulford, actually), so I know it well. The location of this hotel is very very good for the price and what you get in terms of rooms.

I don't really have anything negative to say about the hotel itself - there are some pretty loud noises when the hot water is turned on quite early in the morning, but not too bad I guess.

By far the most uncomfortable aspect of the hotel, unfortunately, is the woman that runs it. Don't get me wrong, she was quite nice and jokey (mainly towards me) but had no real rapor with us in terms of guests, I think she forgets that we're paying her for a service, regardless of our age. And judging from her feedback on many reviews on here she cannot take any remote sort of criticism.

Thank you for your review.

I do apologise for how you found Debra's attitude.
Her sense of humor is not meant to leave a negative impact so I apologise for that on her behalf, it is her way of trying to build up a friendly rapor with guests. We know that you are paying for a service and we try to provide that but, we also try to build up a social relationship with guests.

Sadly within the type of business that we are in, some criticism we can and are more than happy to take as we accept that it can help us in the future. But see we find it difficult, as we put our heart and energy into this business and as can be read from some other reviews we sometimes fail, the best way I can describe it is like having spent ages on caring for your garden, only to be told by some third party that it is not to their taste and listing what they would have done. We are only a small family run Bed & Breakfast.
Other reviews are sometimes quite biased as we may have experienced issues with those guest during their stay.

We are sorry about the water and we will look into this and see what is going on with the pipes, and try and fix this.

I would also like to point out, I operate on her behalf with the reviews, Debra will only check them through and confirm or deny them.
Please understand we do try our hardest.

Kind regards
The Saxon House.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

We stayed here in November during the Nicholas Fayre. We drove up and found it quite easily. It has its own parking which is free of charge unlike the bigger chain hotels around. Reception were friendly and helpful, the owner liked a bit of banter. Our room was of a good size on the main road side. We were not disturbed by any traffic noise. It had an en-suite and even an Ipod decking station which I was pretty chuffed about. The breakfasts were lovely with no qualms on cooking your eggs the way you like them. It really was great value for being so central.

The location was fantastic, pretty much a straight route/ walk into the city centre bringing us directly to the market fayre. Perfect for our christmas shopping weekend. Pretty sure only took 10 mins at a strolling pace. Last time we were in york we stayed at the premier inn but we would definitely stay here again. the main reasons being the location, free parking and value.

A good location for the city centre just a ten minute walk either along the river side or through the streets.
A fantastic fresh cooked breakfast.
The rooms are clean and tidy if a little dated but this is a good bed and breakfast not a 4star hotel.
Going back in February.
