The rooms are lovely only a ten min walk into York centre and you can walk along the river too must be lovely in summer to do this . We booked on our way and we received a warm welcome the pub itself didn't open until 4pm but was in full swing after we had been into town for a couple of cheeky drinks the staff where very friendly . We also had a lovely breakfast which was cooked fresh to our requirements well done to all will be staying again

Stayed two nights - excellent for cleanliness, service, location. Comfortable bed. Lovely walks by the misty river. Hosts Dan and Racheal couldn't have been more welcoming. Historic building with original features such as decorative ceiling roses and original doors and windows. Good Italian food in restaurant. Easy access to York. We will definitely come back.

Room Tip: Big beds - four poster

stayed 3 nights for city break . cheap taxi ride from station ,only ten minute walk along a beautiful path by the river to the city centre. the pub still retains the original décor ,ie stain glass windows ,doors and bar . quiet during the week but lively crowd at weekends, nice friendly atmosphere with ex helpful staff .bedroom nice and cosy ,clean and comfy 4 post bed. fantastic breakfast for the price ,cooked to order full English cereal fruit ect.owner/ landlord was very pleasant and helpfull.scaffolding still up ,lot longer than the owner had expected but no problem with workers. a electric heated towel rail would been handy in bathroom as no where to hang towels. considering the cost of hotels (including the budget chains ) in central york, this accommodation was very good value. would stay again

Room Tip: ask for room away from bar . it is a proper drinking bar so I expect could hear noise at weekends if...

We stayed for one night and can't find a fault with the place, Lucy was extremely helpful and friendly on our arrival and is a real credit to the place, the room was nice and clean, the bathroom spotless, will certainly stay here again .

Room Tip: We stayed in room 2 which was a double and got an excellent nights sleep .

we stayed this weekend and was surprised with the scaffolding but their was no work going on so no worries got their early and was met with a warm welcome and shown to our room straight away, the room was clean and well presented and the bed was very comfortable and had 2 good nights sleep. we don't do breakfast but we did have a evening meal in the restaurant and it was top notch, one off the best meals we have ever had I do recommend it to anyone stopping here.

Room Tip: room 8 lovely room

We stayed here for two nights for a wedding in York. We booked the four poster room which was beautiful. Was a bit worried having seen the stories of the ghost who we now know is called George, but we had no bother from him at all. The pub was really nice with a good selection of real ales. The bathroom was dated but clean and functional with a power shower. Due to the age of the pub the single glazing means you can hear road noise and people passing so might not be the best room for light sleepers. Staff were all lovely, and did breakfast to order which tasted fantastic. The car park was large and parking is provided for guests. We didn't get the chance to eat in the restaurant but the menu looked nice and very good value. From talking to other guests at the wedding we definitely had the best value stay. A fraction of the cost they paid for a similar set up to the lighthorseman. It is out of the town but it is about ten min walk up the towpath to easily get to the Clifford castle on the outskirts of the centre. I managed to walk to the wedding venue in heels it's a nice easy walk and well lit walking back at night also nice to walk along the river. Would defiantly stay here again!

we stayed here last weekend , part of my birthday present from hubby . We arrived a little early and I was apprehensive when I saw the green netting surrounding the building ... I had visions of being awakened by lots of noise and building work , but Gemma , who showed us to our room ( 2 ) told us that the building was being painted , but we didn't see any sign of work while we were there. Our room was described as being a slightly larger double room but I thought it was quite small but with high ceilings and a large dip in the floor leading to the en suite . The room was very clean with a very comfortable bed and spotless bedding , it also had tea and coffee making facilities, which is always welcome ! we found the room very cold , so I asked for the heating to be put on , which was done immediately. We had breakfast the next morning which was lovely , beautifully cooked and there was a good choice of food and drinks . We took the river path into the centre of York , which takes about 10 minutes . In the centre there is an abundance of bars , restaurants and things to do , you could never be bored here ! The next day after touring around different places , we arrived back to a very cold room again . I think as it's now autumn , it should be on a little earlier .. around 5pm , so we could shower in comfort ... Instead of 7pm , when we were going out for the night . Overall we had a very enjoyable stay ... would return again , but maybe in the summer months ?

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are the same , but we stayed in room 2 , which overlooked the side road , very...
