“Lovely room, great breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

Booked for one night for £90 and got an en-suite room with a 4 poster bed with breakfast.

The location is a 10 - 15 minute walk to the centre of york - if you go through the gardens you can take in some of the history there on your way.

The owners gave us a lovely welcome and whilst there were no parking spaces at the back of the hotel (there's only 3), she did show us where else we could park with a permit from her which is a big bonus in york!!!!

Our room was fairly big and had wonderful tall ceilings and a large bathroom with bath and shower.

There was lots of extras - toiletries, hairdryer, sewing kit and a great selection of beverages, though more milk would have been good (or selling some little cartons from the fridge on the stairway!!!)

The bed was very comfortable with lots of pillows, though I wasn't particularly happy about blankets on the bed rather than a duvet!!! It may be more in keeping with the house and decor but I found them very annoying, hot and both me and my husband woke up during the night because of them. Maybe just a personal preference thing!!!

The breakfast was very plentiful, wonderfully cooked and very tasty with lots of drinks and toast on offer and a great cereal and fruit buffet on offer as well.

All in all it is a great b&b - very clean, friendly, all you could ask for in facilities (including free wifi) but don't expect a modern feel - it's decorated quite chintzy but in keeping with the age of the house!!!

I'd certainly recommend!!!!

We stayed one night in April 2012.
Very cozy, clean and affordable. Staff were very good, particularly the lady that served us breakfast. She was a laugh a minute. If you've stayed here you'll know who I'm talking about. :)
Close to old York town.
I highly recommend St Mary's for a stay of any length.

Spent a long weekend in York and returned to our favourite B&B. The welcome is always warm and friendly. Parking is not a problem and the breakfast in the morning is excellent. The only down side is the creaking floorboards which can keep you awake (like wise the squeaky bed of the amorous couple in the room above!) Location is great with the heart of the city a very short stroll through the Yorkshire museum gardens. We could not book for next year as the owners were due to sell by January 5th but the buyer pulled out last week!! leaving them in limbo. Shame as it is a great place to stay.

We normally go to Europe each year for my birthday. Paris, Prague Brussels etc. I was 50 this year and really fancied York a place we frequented when we first met. Back to our roots.

We stayed three nights at 23 St Mary's and I have to say it was magical.

The accommodation is absolutely 5 star. The breakfast the best we have had. Every detail is perfect right down to the choice of crockery and cutlery. Its like staying at Betty's.

Julie and Chris are superb hosts. They have an amazing knowledge of the city its attractions and its eateries.

They made a big fuss of me on my birthday even chilling glasses for my surprise bucks fizz.

We have stayed in good hotels all over the world but have to say 23 is better.

thanks very much and hope to see you again

Room Tip: 2 was lovely with a 4 poster bed

Me and my partner, have been to this B&B before, and it was great, so decided to go there again. We were not disappointed, breakfast fab, our room was lovely and clean, we had everything we wanted. B&B owner's so friendly, we even had a mince pies left in our room, from them. Would defiantly return there again. :)

Room Tip: Very near the city of York.

23 St May's is EXACTLY what you expect of when you think of what a B&B should be. Price, friendly helpful service, bed, food, ambiance and location all combined to make our stay in York a very pleasant experience.

We stayed in the 4 poster bed room and found it to be a great sized room and had a wonderful private bath as well.

For train travellers the location can't be beat as it is only a short walk away from the York station

Actually everything is only a short walk away, it's location for a day of walking through York could not be beat.

Morning breakfast was made to order and and more than I could eat, and I do like eating.....

Heartily recommend this place to anyone going to York.

Great breakfasts cooked by Colin, with excellent choices of cereals and fruits.at buffet. All rooms are different with really comfortable beds. Two really good nights sleep.
B&B very convenient for all the attractions of York, being just a 10 minute stroll from the centre of the city and the station..
. Colin and Julie were great hosts and very obliging. It will be a loss to York hospitality when they retire at the end of the year.

Room Tip: Rooms at back are quietest, but there are a lot of stairs to most rooms
