“A lovely break at a lovely hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2014

We have just returned from a four night break at The Queens Hotel. The breakfast and evening meals were amazing, there is a great selection at breakfast and all good quality products. The choice for the evening meal was brilliant and hard to choose what to have as it was always a great menu.
We would all recommend this hotel as it is a great central location and the staff are all so nice. The Dining room staff work so hard and are so happy at their work.
The down side is take ear plugs as it can get a bit noisy at night with the geese in the water, people going home and delivery vehicles.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

We first stayed at The Queens for the first time 6 years ago, and from our last visit, we found the staff still to be extremely helpful, polite, courteous and efficient. This year however, we had our 4 year old with us. Unfortunately all the rooms overlooking the river were already booked, so we were provided with a lovely room on the 3rd floor...this family room had a very spacious, clean and comfy king sized bed as well as a single bed and provided more than enough space for the three of us, comfortably.

We didn't have problems with noise as such - but late night revellers being a bit noisey returning to their rooms - and the doors banging shut, but we didn't have any issues whatsoever with noises from the lift, or externally (Room 63).

The bar was comfortable, relaxing and offered guests a lovely view over the River, but almost £8 for a glass of wine and a lemonade - ouch!.

The breakfasts were delicious and although offered via a help yourself buffet - was freshly prepared. As the serving platters weren't very big, they weren't piled high with food left to dry out at the top, or become swimming in grease at the bottom, as we've encountered in the past. I asked for poached egg and it was delivered promptly and was a delicious accompanyment to my lovely cooked breakfast. There was a good array of breakfast cereals on offer, but the continential breakfast may have been a let down for some foreign travellers - just my observation anyway!.

I have to say however, that although every surface was clean within our room and where we utilised throughout the hotel, I couldn't fault the housekeeping - sadly the bathroom was looking shabby and dated and sorely in need of some cosmetic maintenance, and the bedroom walls could have done with a fresh lick of paint, to cover the stains.

A word of caution too - the water in the bathroom was boiling hot (I wish I could get my water at home that hot!) but I didn't dare put my little one in the shower, just to be on the safe side. I also felt that having the hairdryers fixed over the sink - to be a bit of a health and safety issue, I'd have thought a fixed hairdryer would have been better positioned within the bedroom, or at least provide a travel hairdryer in a drawer. So ladies, if you're drying your hair with the fixed dryer, don't allow your partner to have a wet shave at the same time!

Overall - The Queens is a lovely hotel, in a very central location, but it needs some TLC - our daughter wanted to live there, but I'd have to give it quite an overhaul befoe I could contemplate moving in!

All in all a lovely visit, great location, reasonable value, especially for York over a bank holiday weekend. If you can turn a blind eye to a few stains on the walls - you can't go far wrong. We would recommend the Queens, but not if you're wanting 4 star luxurious surroundings.

Room Tip: Book a room high up, to avoid noise from outside

This hotel isn't too bad. Clean with a half decent breakfast. Bit noisy outside in evening during our bank holiday weekend stay. Lots of hen parties going on in town and drunken loud revellers. Such a picturesque and interesting town but unfortunately was marred by the highly visible and audible party animals.

Absolutely average on all counts bar the location.
A tired, rather uninspiring 2 star hotel which needs some serious TLC across all areas and could then probably be a great 2 star hotel!! It is noisy in the rooms both from external sources [human and waterfowl riverside] and your immediate neighbours. Someone likes to selotape notices up on the wallpaper as they seem to be everywhere!

We booked for a 2 night stay on a DBB basis [ the deal on offer] knowing it wasn't going to be top notch but were still a little surprised by the basics that were missing/overlooked. Our room was 'fine' - clean [ish], comfy and well appointed view wise; as a base for our getaway, no huge complaints. Apart from the curtains, which were hung over a rail, underneath the velux window [which had a highly effective blackout blind] and were a graveyard of various creepy crawlies and dust. Give 'em a clean or take them down!
The en-suite was ok but had very cheap towels and only small bath towels with nowhere to dry them as there was no heating in there at all. As another reviewer points out, the hot water is BOILING, and flows very fast into a pretty small basin. Hence I got soaked the first time I used the taps. The shower on the other hand is a bit....meh! Heat and power are lacking for the shower and yet the basin could boil a cuppa whilst pressure washing it at the same time - odd?!?
We went down for dinner the first night despite reading the most unappetising, basic menu selotaped to the lift wall. OK, we thought, we'll give it a go as we've paid for it and we just wanted something hot to eat after travelling. However, on approaching the 'restaurant', the smell was overpowering and reminded us of a cross between school dinners/hospital food trollies! We did wait to be seated but when the couple in front of us were shown to their seats, we made a sharp exit. Needless to say we didn't go for night 2 either - we had 2 great meals at restaurants neighbouring the hotel instead. Breakfast was a free for all - chaotic customers, no hotel staff organisation and usually 1 member of waiting staff running round having to do everything, including this morning... cooking the poached eggs!
The food on offer was ok and there was enough to get a plate of something to tide you over - bacon, scrambled eggs and beans for me. It was obvious that the constituents of the buffet were all very cheap & cheerful, but I have had worse at higher rated places. So, all in all, breakfast gets a tick from us.
Car parking gets another tick even at £20 for 2 nights; it's convenient and cheaper than some of the city car parks we encountered as we strolled around. It was also quite interesting to see how high the water level got in the car park from the recent floods.
Major niggle = the room key cards. Argh!! Pot luck if either of them worked and 2 trips to reception to get them 're-charged', which didn't help much actually. So, change the cards and upgrade the door readers please.
Location get the real praise though...great for strolling into the city, good views from the higher floor riverside rooms and location is the main reason we would go back to this hotel. Yes, we would, but only on a BB basis.

Room Tip: riverside, high floor are great but noisy!

This is a basic 2 star hotel, but has everything you need. Check in was quick and easy, even turning up several hours earlier and leaving our luggage was not a problem until check in time. Only comment would be reception staff could be in uniform since they are customer facing. The room itself was large enough and clean with flat screen TV and a comfortable bed. Hot water in the ensuite is very hot so watch out for that. Breakfast was nice, however the chef could do with putting some seasoning in the scrabbled eggs, however other eggs are available which the chef sorts out quick enough. Some ice needed for the juices to keep them chilled. The location of the hotel is great for everything in York, which is why we picked it. Overall the hotel could do with a bit of a facelift and a coat of paint. But like I said in the title you get what you pay for.

Nice hotel but some of the waiting staff didn't have a clue what they were doing. Nice, clean room and helpful reception staff. The entire hotel has free wifi. Had a bit of trouble connecting at first, but once connected it came in handy. Not enough room for all guests of the hotel in the dining area.
