I know York fairly well and we have visited the City at least twice a year between business and pleasure over the last 25 years. We've stayed at a large number of hotels and B&B's over the years but this is definately a gem we will use again. The hotel is older and some of the public areas look a bit run down but it is clear that major upgrading is taking place and the hotel was clean and welcoming. The bedroom we were allocated was a family room so larger than some reviewers had and we definately weren't complaining. It was spacious and clean with all the mod cons you'd expect in a good hotel ( including bedside lights unlike an earlier visitor). The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom beautiful with plenty of sachets of shampoo and shower wash. Breakfast was lovely. (Choice of fruit juices, cereals, toast, jams, tea, coffee and the usual coooked stuffs) and the staff were helpful and very friendly.
The Groves is ideally placed with private parking for guests which is an added bonus in York. We like to park the car when we arrive and then walk everywhere and the hotel is a gentle 10 minute stroll from the Minster. (which incidentally although a place of Worship is now charging an entry fee of £6 per adult )
When looking for a hotel I always check several price comparison sites but on this occasion the cheapest prices were on the hotels own website www.thegrovesyork.co.uk
and at £55 a night B&B (per room) great value in what can be an overpriced City. We are already planning our next visit in early spring and The Groves will be the first hotel we will be checking for price and availability and I would have no hesitation recomending it to friends and family.
