“great place to stay in York”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

My girlfriend and I stayed here this weekend (12th - 14th July) on our trip to York and it was a great experience. The weekend was unbearably hot, but the A/C in the Bootham suite was a godsend while we were there. The staff were all very friendly and offered great advice about where to go in York and some handy tips about travel times to get to places and times to avoid some attractions. The Bootham suite is beautifully decorated (as is the rest of the hotel) and very comfortable. We slept with the windows open because of the heat and, apart from someone snoring in another room, there was no noise whatsoever from the surrounding area. Breakfast, a morning newspaper and wi-fi is all included if you booked directly with the hotel.

A great place to stay and one that we will definitely return to.

Room Tip: 15 - 20 minutes walk from the station if you take the main roads, or 10 minutes if you take the back...

This guest house is centrally located., the centre of York is a pleasant 10 minutes walk away. The Groves is rated with 4 stars and whilst room 37 is slightly on the small side; lit is comfortable. A king size bed would have been preferable to the double bed, however we spend most of our days out and consider our suggestion for a king size bed .. Just that- a suggestion!!
The staff were welcoming , polite, and friendly, and those staff who clearly appeared to be experiencing difficulty in exercising the hotels rehearsed politeness, maintained impeccable politeness.
Breakfasts were a wash with variety, and service was prompt. This guest house and the rooms remained spotlessly clean - (we are ardent travellers and not keeping accommodation clean is for us a deal breaker!).
We are planning a return visit and plan to spoil ourselves to a weeks break.
Well done Groves ; you have restored our faith in clean, elegant English accommodation!!

Room Tip: Try and avoid room 37 . The view is of the car park and the room is a little on the small side.

Ah, the English! During my recent one month visit to London, I took an unplanned week-end get-away to York. Of course, I read trip advisor reviews on B&Bs before selecting one. This is a quaint Victorian style house with guest rooms in both the old main house and new rooms in the back which surround a car park. Since I was a solo guest, I was put upstairs in the old house on the second floor (for Americans) or the first floor (for the Brits and Latinos.) That meant I was in a very small room, like one of the maid's rooms in Downtown Abbey, but it was totally sufficient for my needs. The hot water worked in the shower and there was a tea kettle..good!
It meant I got to walk up the beautiful oak staircase every time I went to my room..lovely.
The breakfasts are good, well-cooked, and you have choices from a continental style to a more traditional English style. The ladies who serve are nice also. There is a nice-size bar area but a glass of wine was expensive and use of the internet is not free. (I left my I-Pad in South America so was using The Groves laptop to send a few necessary emails.) In the US, that type of minimal email usage of the hotel computer is free to guests, with time limits of usage.
I have a hip replacement that sometimes flares up but even so, I did not find the walk into town too difficult if you take it at a leisurely pace and look at your surroundings.

The BEST part of the experience was the eccentric, quirky lady (Elaine or ?) who checked me in on Friday night. We spent an hour chatting in the lobby because we were waiting for a friend of hers to bring a hot water bottle for my hip which had flared up a bit. Anyway, she only works there about 5 months a year and then travels around Europe in her caravan, para-gliding and having various adventures. She is a psychic and telepathic, so while I sat and listened off she went with her ghost stories. It was wonderful! I hope she will be there when you check in.
On Sunday morning breakfast, one of the owners was there....not a friendly chap by American standards and would not allow me to have another croissant without paying extra for it!
Grumpily, he did the check-out..who knows maybe he was stressed out by other things...but when I told him how wonderful Elaine (if that is her name) had been, he looked at me and said: "She is totally crazy but we trust her completely when she's around the area to work." I had to tell him I thought she was the BEST part of staying at The Groves.
If you want an easily accessible room with modern conveniences, then insist on one of the car park rooms. But if you want to experience the ambience of a lovely old home and perhaps be lucky enough to talk with Elaine, then definitely opt for the main old house. It was all worthwhile!

Room Tip: More ambience if you stay in the main house; more modern in the car park rooms.

Glad you felt safe as a single traveller; a lot goes on behind the scenes to ensure this.

Crikey....... your hoping for the Trip Advisor badge for probably the longest review?! (;-)

I will read through this at home this evening and take any appropriate actions if required.

Kind regards

David

We stayed in the family cottage in the back of the property. It was clean and comfortable and a lot of space for the four of us. the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included and very good. Unfortunately it is outside the city walls so it is a bit of a walk to the center of York.

The atmosphere is very relaxed , breakfast is very nicely cooked and a good varied menu , the rooms are clean well equipped and the use of the hotel laundry , for a small fee , is great . You can walk into the city easily and part of the city wall is also close.

Room Tip: The cottage rooms out the back lovely

Myself and my husband have stayed a few times now, our last visit 7th june for 2 nights, the staff are very friendly and do everything they possibly can to help the guests . We have stayed in different rooms and all have been spectacularly clean and very comfortable. There are several different breakfasts available and all cooked to order with toast and locally produced jams and marmalade.
The hotel which is situated in a quiet street with its own private parking is a short walk from the city, we only took approx 10 minutes to walk to the minster.
We have also stayed for a midweek break which was at a reduced price when offers were available on their website and would always check for availability and prices before staying anywhere else.
