“Lovely friendly place - great breakfast - free parking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

The Groves isn't really what I would call a guest house - more a very good hotel that happens not to do evening meals. I judge an establishment by the quality of its breakfast sausages - The Groves are superb.

Located in a quiet residential street about 10 minutes leisurely walk from the city, it's an ideal base. Just leave your car in the free car park. If you've never been to York, it's a parking nightmare. Free parking is a huge advantage.

The rooms are pleasant and comfy.

We'd definitely go back again.

(;-/) Shame you missed the Sausage tasting a few weeks back - we're always on the look out for better ones, without horse of course.

Thank you for your lovely write up - it was a pleasure to look after you both.

If you are thinking of revisiting we have some cracking midweek deals right throughout the forthcoming seasons.

We look forward to seeing you again soon.

This was our second visit to this hotel, this time for a short overnight stay after travelling south on a visit.

We booked this hotel again due to the warm staff, lovely breakfast and proximity to the centre of York - I'm happy to report that not much has changed! We received a warm welcome from staff (one who remembered us from our stay a couple of years ago).

Our room was small but very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The shower room was very small but the cubicle itself was fine. We had a comfortable sleep and were not disturbed during the night.

Breakfast the next morning was lovely, fresh and well cooked with a nice pot of tea. What more can a person ask for?

We left the car in the private car park (a reasonable £6 on day of checkout from midday onwards) so that we could spend a little more time exploring York which is a leisurely 10-15 min walk away.

We would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: ask for a large double for longer stays

Thank you for your review and the return trip to The Groves - sometimes we are half full with returning guests. This is very satisfying and we are extremely greatful to see you again.

All rooms are different shapes, sizes, bathrooms, windows & prices. We allocate rooms as fairly and sensibly as possible and generally speaking guests staying for just 1 night would be allocated the smallest room. To avoid this and if required for a modest additional charge a large room should be opted for. Having said this all rooms are satisfactory and fit or purpose !!! (;-)

We have some great mid-week prices at the moment - do take a look. Saturdays as demand is highest are always expensive though.

My daughter and a friend stayed here in February for two nights and they came back with rave reviews of the place, especially with regards to the hearty breakfast portions and the good location close to the city centre and the cathedral. The only reason I have not given The Groves five stars was due to the fact that - due to the hotel's pet-friendly policy - my daughter was woken on the last night of her stay by the woman staying next door's pet dog which was allowed to sleep inside the adjacent hotel room.
Great and considerate service from hotel staff.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room away from the front of the hotel as this is where the road is.

Super to hear that you had a great stay and thank you for your positive comments - very satisfying.

Regarding dogs, they are NOT allowed at The Groves. We recall the dog was barking in the next door garden and once we were alerted we sorted this matter out to your satisfaction. Wufffff!

Kind regards

David

We stayed for two nights, 15th & 16th of April. No complaints at all, from the very warm welcome afforded to us on arrival to our check out on Wednesday morning. The Groves is a lovely, characterful property which is in a quiet location and is tastefully decorated throughout. The room was spotlessly clean and the bed supremely comfortable, and the bathroom had a nice large shower. The breakfast was excellent both mornings, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Ten minutes walk from the centre of York, and with a secure car park as well. Book direct and get free Wifi, we only discovered this on arrival.

We spent two nights at The Groves and really glad we did. We checked Trip Advisor reviews first and all seemed positive. The Groves is situated in a quiet street just ten minutes walk from the City centre. The car park is at the back of the Hotel and are safe as anywhere can be.
Our room was quite large at the front of the Hotel with very nice quaint windows. Bathroom was clean and fresh with the usual soaps/shower gel etc.
Breakfast ranged from full english to very healthy fruit, yoghurt and honey and all was well cooked and very tasty. The staff could not have been more helpful nor could the Manager. I am sure there are faults but we couldnt find them.
The Groves is an ideal base to explore York and it was a pleasure to return in the evening.
Would I stay there again or recommend it to others? Yes, without hesitation.

Room Tip: I can only comment on the room we had (30) which was at the front of the building- very good.

I was a little disappointed with this hotel. I expected more of a luxury B&B experience, but it ended up being just a small hotel that lacked some amenities expected for a 4-star property (air conditioning, to begin with). My room was small and only accesible by stairs, but that was expected.

That said, the house is charming and it's in a very nice residencial neighborhood, 10 minutes from central York on foot. It was a good place to start exploring the old town and Castle Howard.

I was concerned to read your review and sorry you had a misconception of our establishment being 'luxury'. WE are careful NEVER to use the word 'luxury' so I was mystified where you derived your image from? We are pleasant 4**** guest accommodation and would rather modestly understate what we offer.

Being from Argentina you may not appreciate the subtle differences in whats in the UK hotel sector ie Guest Accommodation V hotel.

Nevertheless Im pleased you found us at least satisfactory.

My last comment will be more light hearted .... why do we need air conditioning?!(;-)

Kind regards

David

We spent a lovely weekend away in York. The Groves was a good choice, (chosen through reviews on tripadvisor) as it was in a lovely tranquil street only 10 minutes walk from the city centre. Our room was quite small but had everything we needed. The decor was tasteful and I particularly liked the colourful modern feature tiles in the bathroom. Staff were helpful providing fresh milk and sorting out a fault with the kettle immediately. The good service continued at breakfast with a warm welcome and delicious food. The fresh fruit salad had 9 different types of fruit and made a nice contrast to the full English the previous morning. No traffic noise at night despite being close to the city, however as it is an old building, there were some creaks and squeaks from other rooms when people were moving around or having a shower. It was good to know our car was secure with a designated car parking space off the street free of charge. We would recommend the Groves and would stay again. Thank you to the staff.

Thank you for your comments it was a pleasure to look after you over the weekend.

Some rooms are small but fine for a weekend trip. Larger rooms are available and a must for 'long haul' guests and those staying over 3 days.

I was particuarly pleased to read that you liked the new decor!

Kind regards
