“Enjoyable stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2012

We spent two very comfortable nights at The Groves which is a 10 minute walk from the centre of York. Breakfast was excellent and the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. The cosy bar was a pleasant way to round off the day.
If weather permits, do try and go for a river sail.....it's a great way to see your surroundings.

We stayed here for a long weekend. Room was small but adequate. Clean and tidy. No view but we didn't need one I guess. Bathroom was lovely and clean and quite big in comparison to the room.
Breakfast was very good. I had cooked breakfast twice and continental once which was a huge dish of fresh fruit, yogurt and croissant, lovely.
It was a good ten minute walk to the main shops but we didn't find this a problem as weather was kind. Have previously stayed slightly nearer.
We went in the local pub a few times The Exhibition, its part of a hotel but lovely and cosy, roaring fire and with a jukebox that a regular couple kept topping up.
The hotel does have its own bar which we tried to use but the girl was too busy on the desk with many guests who wanted to check in, this was about 10pm, she did apologize but we decided not to wait any longer.
York is lovely as we know as visited many times.

Thank you for your your review and have noted the contents.

Future guests please note that the larger single and double rooms are tremendous value at just £10 extra per night. Our standard single rooms are VERY small. Our Standard Double rooms are fine for a couple of days, and whilst wholly reasonable are on the smaller side, arguably comparatively good value though........ - it all depends on your budget of course!!

I am sorry you were not served quickly enough at the bar - this was an exception when everything seemed to happen at once!!

Kind regards

David

Having read the reviews on tripadvisor we decided to stay for two nights, originally we intended to stay on Wednesday 14 March but due to unforeseen circumstances we had to change to Monday Tuesday 12-13 March. When we telephoned the booking was moved at no extra charge and an e-mail of confirmation was sent. The room was on the first floor number 26 and was very comfortable with on suite facilities, ideal for what we required and only 10 minutes walk to the town centre. All the staff was professional polite and very helpful, on arrival we booked in and was given a booklet with a map and local attractions with a rundown of local amenities. The breakfast was superb and really sets you up for the day, with a choice of cereal and a full English with orange juice tea coffee also toast and marmalade. All in all we had a very pleasant stay and if we return to York we will definitely use this Hotel again.

Stayed here for 2 nights on a visit to York.Had double room which was on the top floor.Whilst the room was compact it had all the facilities we required which included good en suite with shower, large flat screen tv and tea/coffee making facilities.Decor throughout the hotel is excellent with all the common areas recently refurbished.Breakfasts were excellent with a good range to suit all. I opted for full english on both occasions whilst my wife sampled the continental fayre on one occasion which was also very good. The hotel is in a quiet cul de sac which ensures a good nights sleep; it is however a mere 10 minute walk to the city walls which made it easy for us to get out and about during the day and when eating out at night. We also used Savages Bar in the hotel for a nightcap where there is a good range of drinks at reasonable prices.Excellent car park facilities and for a small fee you can leave your car there after check out on the day of departure to enable you to make the most of the last day.All in all an excellent hotel offering good value for money.

Room Tip: There are quite a few stairs so opt for a lower floor if you have mobility problems.

We are delighted you enjoyed your trip and summarising us so succinctly.

Our standard bedrooms and/or bathrooms can be on the small side but as you say fine for a couple of days and we do have the Savages Bar lounge to relax and read the papers with no obligation to purchase.

Thank you for your satisfying review and do email us should you ever be considering another trip to York.

With kind regards from all of us at The Groves.

I've recently returned from a 2 night stay at The Groves with my partner who'd booked the trip as a birthday treat for me. The hotel is situated in a quiet cul-de-sac approximately 15 minutes walking distance from the town centre.

On arrival we checked in with Gordon and I took the opportunity to ask about local restaurants in the area. We were recommended what proved to be an excellent moderately priced restaurant away from the tourist traps, it was very good.

We were then shown to our room, this was spotlessly clean and really nice. A nice touch was a box of chocolates and a card from our genial hosts wishing me a happy birthday which was a lovely gesture.

Food was excellent too and both my partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our well cooked full English breakfasts in a laid back, relaxed atmosphere.

If i'm knit picking the bathroom was a little on the small side, but that's a very minor quibble. The hotel is well appointed, spotless throughout and the staff were very helpful and friendly.

I would recommend this place without question and i'll definately return to The Groves when visiting York in the future.

Excellent!!
