“Unusual and pleasant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

After scouring the site in search of somewhere to eat breakfast on our last morning we decided on Coffee Culture and I am glad we did. It is a good way down Goodramgate and appears to be a normal coffee shop at first glance, but is most certainly not.
We opened the door, walked in and were immediately greeted by all the Aussie staff behind the counter which was great. It is waitress service so you are told to just go an find yourself a table. Luckily we had read the reviews so we knew what we were letting ourselves in for, which was a trip up some scarily steep stairs to reach both the first and second floors, both of which only accommodate a few tables on each. Because it is so small it is nice and cosy, so if you want to eat here then you will need to make sure that you go in early to beat the rush.
The service is quick, and it is simply amazing that these girls negotiate the steep stairs whilst carrying plates of hot foot and trays of coffee!

The menu is plain and simple, and at the end of the day there is no need for a pretentious list of fancy food when all you really is the basics. Although, that said, it is not often that you see on a cafe menu something as yummy as Mushrooms on thick toast (which is a favourite of mine). We both had the full english which consists of 1 x good thick sausage, 2 x rashers of bacon, 1 x fried egg, 1 x black pudding, some mushrooms, a pot of baked beans and two nice thick slices of buttered toast. Yes some places may go overboard and give you 3 or three of everything, but this food was all clearly freshly cooked and I was plenty full after finishing it all.

The coffee's are nice and simple, but there is the great addition of being able to have a cafetiere for 1 with one of a small selection of coffees. Most helpful that they tell you what kind of coffee's they are as well. We had the Kenyan which was awesome.

Overall, very happy with our first meal of the day and prepared us for heading out in to a very damp crowded day. GO EAT!

“Little Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

One of my favourite coffee bars in York. Friendly staff, Good Service. Its a simple menu so if your wanting fine dinning its not for you but, if you want good value, good quality, good service then give it a visit. Its a bit dated inside but has a great atmosphere. The Australian Lady is GREAT........
