Stayed from Friday 6th July 2008 to Sunday 8th July,
1. bistro/ meal's non existant (dont think ever have been!)
2. seems waitress is blind -unable to see breakfast dishes on tables all around -but still seem's able to take our breakfast order, however breakfast very good! not enough staff!
3. no one staffing the bar and limited drinks (could be a gold mine people were willing to stay but service very poor)
4. where is the management? no one to organise, the web site does tend to mislead one somewhat.

However the gardens are lovely and this could be a great hotel ,bar and bistro (making lots more cash too!!) if the owners got their act together.

  • Liked — the price
  • Disliked — lack of service cleaning away breakfast tables, poor service at bar with limited stock

The hotel looked good from the outside and the flatscreen tv had a buit in DVD player. They are the only plus points about this hotel. The room was dirty and clealy hadn't been cleaned in a long time - they hadn't even put a hoover round. Some of the cobwebs had been there so long that the spiders in them had died of old age. There was mould and dirt in the bathroom where the electrical connecton to the heated shower rail had been repaired with insulating tape that was slowly being burn away. There was mould in growing in the corners and damp patched on the walls in many bedrooms. There was dirty laundry in one corridor all weekend. Another corridor stank of human bodily waste. The fire doors in the corridor wern't fire doors! And would not have stopped smoke spreading through the building.
It turned out that the chef had walked out so other hotel staff where having to cover the cooking of breakfasts which took anything up to an hour to arrive. The lack of a chef also ment that there was no food available in the evenings. Also the ashtrays in the outside smoking areas hadn't been emptied and were overflowing including the one that was situated by the main entrance.

  • Liked — It looked good from the outside...
  • Disliked — ...everything else

Arrived at hotel about 8 pm, looked good, how wrong could we be.
very polite young man on reception checked us in to "superior" room then informed us that resturant was closed due to the chef walking out. Great having driven two and a half hours, or well we thought these things happen. Found pub down road (The Windmill) which was great. Anyway thought we would go back to hotel for few drinks at the bar, well to get a drink you need to go to reception and ask for a member of bar staff, who to be fair arrives, its the same person!!!
So gave up on that and thought lets have early night, went to room corridor had very strange smell, anyway into room and being tierd straight to bed. No sleep and 8 hours later, due to roll together bed and snoring in adjacent room, got up for shower. Bathroom had nice touches like four bulbs each side of mirror, great if you crusty the clown and need make up otherwise just made room even hotter than the heated towel rail already had!! Shower was either cold or so hot took skin off!!
Breakfast to be fair was adequate if you like tinned mushrooms and reheated sausage!!
There was a member of staff on reception/bar for over 24 hours.
Wont bore travelers with details of rooms with dust from when place built, mould on walls, paint peeling etc. There is of course the 6 acres of gardens, pity only 2 of those grass cut, rest wilderness.
Could be such great place but needs staff, ie cleaners, gardeners, painters etc

  • Liked — Checking out!!!! staff (what few about) good
  • Disliked — Smell, no resturant, dirty,

Looked good on the web site, good AA review. Fortunatley booked it via CentralR.com so got it cheaper.
We booked a "Superior room", hate to think what the others were like. The room had a massive damp patch in the corner, bed was clean, that was all, bathroom was ill fitting had to run round in the shower to get wet. The bathroom bin was not emptied nor the sink or toilet cleaned. The hotel looked like it was fitted out and run by Mr Bodge it. The carpet were really dirty.
Good thing - location

I stopped at this hotel for a weekend break. The room I was put into had mould growing out of the wall. It was so bad that fur was growing out. The receptionist moved us to another room which was ok but the interior was horrible. Orange bed covers and curtains no worse than a hostel. When I thought things could not get any worse I went to the mens toilets to see that a bin had been put under a leaking sink and that mushrooms from the damp were growing from the wall!!!

  • Liked — Food was fantastic. Friendly reception.
  • Disliked — Mouldy fur growing growing from the wall and mushrooms growing outside the mens toilets
