“Nice hotel but wouldnt call it a 4*”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

Nice hotel, central location, room well equipped with everything you need including safe and iron.

Hotel staff pleasant enough but a smile wouldnt have gone a miss once in a while!!

Breakfast was ok but not a huge amount to choose from!!

overall a gud stay!

Room Tip: Dont get a room overlooking Train Station as you will never get any sleep!!!

Recently stayed two nights at the Royal York Hotel for a work conference and I didn't really know what to expect. First of all you have to give it full marks for it's location, right next to the train station. Literally, you can access the hotel from a side door from the station and you are straight in. I found all the staff to be very helpful and I couldn't fault them at all. They were all extremely polite and friendly and I felt very welcomed when I arrived, even though they were extremely busy checking people in.
I have to say that my room wasn't the best, it was a single room and was pretty small, you could fit the double bed in and not much more. It was lovely and clean though and with a the facilities that you expect from a four star hotel. The fact that you were supposed to pay for Wi-fi though at 50p per minute does let this hotel down though - I stay quite often at Days Inn where it is free! Also the TV channels are pretty limited to around ten channels - seems to try and want to direct you to the pay per view movies which were very expenisive at £10 each. The bathroom was a fair size and lovely and clean but the slightly grotty grouting was not so nice.
Breakfast in the morning wasn't of a great quality but I was impressed that they had vegetarian sausages on offer but the rest of the English breakfast offering were very oily and greasy and that didn't really appeal. I didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening or use the gym so can't comment on these.
There is currenlty a huge wheel in the grounds of the hotel which you may think is a benefit or a downside. It did look very pretty at night time but a colleague who had a window facing out to the front of the hotel said he felt he had to keep his curtains shut all the time to stop people seeing in from the wheel. My room faced onto the back and you get a pretty grim view over the train station and you can hear the trains but only very faintly and it certainly didn't effect my sleep at all.
The grandeur of this hotel though is what I loved about it. As soon as you walk in you can't help but feel impressed with the feel of the place and if the massive chandeliers don't impress you then nothing will!
Overall I enjoyed by stay at this hotel, loved the atmosphere of the place and the friendly staff but it was slightly let down by the room I was in which really needed some updating ( I wouldn't expect peeling wallpaper and mouldy grouting in a four star hotel). The location however can't be beaten and it makes a great base for exploring that wonders that York has to offer.

Room Tip: I'd chose the front of the hotel if you like a nice view and not the train station.

I stayed at the Royal York recently for a conference. Food overall was good considering the number of delegates. My room was very good although a colleague was in the basement and was less favourable about it. I personally found the service of staff very polite and helpful if a bit formal. We had a very nicely served dinner in the events centre. At lunch on a couple of occasions we had to make our point quite strongly to keep our group together, staff were at times rather officious at lunch. The shower in the room was very hot but it was a very cold day so it was welcome. Overall I would highly recommend this place for business events, although it would be outside my price range if I wasn't on business. Excellent location next to the railway station and within 10 minutes walk of most of the main sights.

Room Tip: Avoid the basement

The grandeur of this hotel is visible from the outset. It is close to the station, nearly on the platform! The Victorian feel of this hotel was just fantastic. The chandeliers were so sparkly you got lost in them. The rooms were large and clean, if not a bit oddly shaped! I would certainly come again

Room Tip: Those facing the front of the hotel may get a better view than mine of the platform at York Station!

This is a beautiful victorian hotel situated next door to the train station. It's lovely inside with lots of quirky old features. I had room 213 which was a large, light spacious room which I was very happy with. My colleague had a room in the basement however (-1) it was not as large, a bit dark and the corridore outside was a thoroughfare for staff and so was noisey.
Fairly nice gym and pool area. Free for guests.
Food was good but service not so good. I booked 2 reservations for dinner but still noone had me down when I arrived! The food took ages to arrive.

Room Tip: Room 213 large and light

My boyfriend and I booked this hotel for our anniversary. Although I live and work in York we thought that it would be nice to enjoy a night of luxury. The hotel was good value for money. Although the room was very traditionally decorated and the bathroom could have done with being updated, the bed was huge and everything was nice and clean. The best part about this hotel was that it was close to the train station/town, but most of all the leisure facilities; there was a pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room which were completely free to use!
