“A midle class hub.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

We were reccomended here by the owners at Carlton House as we arrived latish in the afternoon and wanted somewhere not too far away that didnt serve plastic food. Great service, friendly staf lovely Yorkshire dishes. Only negative is it just that little bit cramped.

“Just lovely.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

We have been twice now, both times it has been extremely busy but then that's a good sign surely?
We love the atmosphere and the food. the bread, the salad, the quiche , the coffee are all just lovely.

“great cafe - all the good comments are true”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

This is such a great cafe, the only problem is that it is quite small with limited seating. Great place to go for breakfast.

“No wonder it's popular !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

Four of us popped in on the recommendation of a friend. The place was very busy but we found a table quickly and the service was prompt and very friendly. The only problem was deciding from the extensive menu. The food was really good and beautifully prepared. The prices are very reasonable. Quirky touches added to a really nice atmosphere. We will certainly return. What a find !

“Perfect local”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

I live round the corner, and this is just my favourite, indeed perfect, local neighbourhood daytime cafe/restaurant. The food is delicious - wonderfully cooked and inventive. You can always get brunch staples off the fixed menu - like waffles and bacon, boiled eggs and soldiers, bacon sandwiches, deli sandwiches, quiches, soup etc, but then there are also ever-changing seasonal dishes alongside. Get lucky and you might get the awesome pulled pork or Philly cheese steak sandwiches, or confit duck leg, perhaps paella or bouillabaisse, or wild mushroom risotto. This variation means it is always interesting to visit, even if like me, you go in weekly. The Pig and Pastry also bakes - and the breads and cakes are a real highlight. It's very difficult to resist taking a box home.

The staff are very friendly, and the prices are fair. It can be insanely busy - personally I would never plan to visit with a big group. The Pig and Pastry is perfect for one or two diners - especially if you don't mind getting to know the other locals, as sharing tables is normal practice - especially the big tables at the front. All seating is first come first served, and all food and drinks are counter service.

I always swore I would never review this place, as I still want to be able to get in - but living in the area, it makes my weekly shopping trip down the Bishy Road a total joy, and encourages me to work from home whenever possible so I can sneak in for a crafty lunch or coffee. As it has given me such pleasure, I think it's only fair to pay them back with a top-drawer review. One of the very best places for daytime food anywhere in York.
