“Very Comfortable Stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

My husband and I very much enjoyed our stay at this particular Holiday Inn in York when compared to many of the other hotels that we stayed in while touring England. Our room was spacious, clean, comfy and very well appointed. Customer service was excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our hot full English Breakfast the following morning. However, we felt that the Internet charges were rather expensive, especially given the overall cost of the rooms.

I stayed her for one night on a business trip. The staff are very friendly and do their best to help - those in the restaurant are especially friendly. The rooms are basic, though. I discovered that only the executive rooms have an in-room safe (which I think really needs to be as standard these days), as is the use of a mini bar if you want (again, I didn't have this). Tea/coffee making facilities are available in the room, which is great, but no biscuits. The lock on the bathroom is very dated - the place really does need a facelift. My bed was comfortable enough - but the sound from folk arriving back at their rooms late at night woke me. I don't think the sound proofing is that great. Flat screen TV in the room, but not all freeview channels available. No free internet access. There is a hairdryer (found by searching the various drawers in the room), but you need to keep the on button depressed the whole time you're using it. This would be a problem for those with arthritic hands, for example. Breakfast was OK, but limited. Dinner was better - I had a decent fish and chips, and the service was good. Lunch that was provided as part of the meeting I was attending at the hotel was basic, and lukewarm. It's OK, but not somewhere I'd choose to stay myself.

8 blokes stayed here as we were having a night out in York. Hotel was good enough although a little pricey for what it is for one night. Hotel was comfortable and clean with polite and helpful staff. Room was basic but tidy and served its purpose. Only thing I will say that's a negative is the choice of tiles in the bathroom that make you dizzy when showering (room 208). Would stay here again if I was in York.

Had the opportunity to stay at the holiday inn in York for a 4 day period. The location is just perfect, 5' drive to the city, the staff is very helpful and willing to assist, but most of all, you have to meet George at breakfast, he is absolutely superb. A truly lovely place to stay

As I am a member of IHG Hotels Rewards I wanted to stay within the group hotel structure and I got a really good deal booking through the rewards club. However, I have mixed comments for this hotel. The room was small yet had all the facilities for an executive room which we had booked and we did have complimentary chocolate bars and water waiting for us on arrival. We also had a 37inch flat screen TV for entertainment in the room. The hotel reception staff were excellent and very helpful. They do have excellent savings on tickets for the York Dungeons if you are planning a visit which are available for immediate use with no restrictions. They also have 20% discount vouchers for use at the Jorvik museum as well. I was disappointed at the charging structure for using the internet which I thought was exorbitant at £12.95 PER DAY (or £3.95 for 1 hour) especially as Holiday Inn Express are offering free internet to all guests at present. The restaurant which we only used for breakfast, had poor service with delays in restocking hot food when empty and on one occasion when we were waiting the staff decided to take much of the remaining food to complete room service meals which further exacerbated our delay. The tables were not cleared efficiently and tables although wiped down were left rather sticky to the touch. However, the food when available was really very good with plenty of choices from cereals, hot food to pancakes and fruit and plenty of options of drinks both hot and cold.
The hotel was situated only about one and a half miles from the centre of York and was easily accessible by local bus which was probably the most convenient way of getting into the City. Parking in the City is expensive and somewhat limited in availability. We found the best way was to drive (or even walk) the short distance to the 'Park & Ride' facility only 5 minutes away and get the Park & Ride bus into the City which is actually cheaper than taking the other local buses and it is free to park at this car park. The service runs every 10 minutes and only takes about 10 minutes to get into the City.
One further disappointment was that this hotel does not have a gym, nor a swimming pool nor any sauna or jacuzzi facilities so it is a bit limited if you like that type of thing.

Room Tip: Higher floors (especially 3rd) are best as this floor has all the executive rooms which although a l...

Dear Peter K
Thank you very much for your review and your constructive feedback, I am pleased you found our team to be friendly and welcoming and you took advantage of our discounted tickets for local attractions. I am sorry you felt you room was small, all of our rooms are of a similar size as we are somewhat limited by the size and structure of our building, we do endeavour to ensure that our guests are comfortable at all times. The Holiday Inn Brand of hotels do offer a high speed, fully secure internet service, this is free to our Gold and Platinum IHG reward members and in 2014 it is intended for this to become free for all our members. Currently we do have Internet packages available from £3.95. Please be assured your comments with regard to your observations during breakfast service are appreciated and these will be discussed with the team.

Many thanks

We stayed here after getting a hotwire deal for $70 US per night. The hotel was great and the staff couldn't do enough to help us. They were so friendly. We took the bus from the train station and into town and bought a First group pass for 7.40 GBP which allowed the three of us to go back and forth to town as much as we wanted in a day--not very far but wanted to save our walking for the sights. The hotel was exceptionally clean and the shower/bath had amazing water pressure and good quality toiletries, however no conditioner. We loved our stay in York and would definitely go back to the Holiday Inn again. The towels were much larger than I'm used to in Canada.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 109 and it was just great.
