We stayed 2 nights (room #3). The room was adequate in size and the ensuite was larger than normal. Very clean. The usual array of coffee/tea and bathroom toiletries. No room fridge so only UHT milk in the room. Bed comfortable. Expect a low level of traffic noise if you sleep with the window open. Nice lounge on ground floor.

Staff friendly, breakfast is the usual buffet/cooked meals. Food good.

Small car park but owner very helpful at arranging car parking, he'll look after your car keys if you have to park in someone's way. Parking is difficult in York so this facility is very welcome. York's city wall is 5 minutes walk and the far side of the main town/attractions (eg the Minster) are 15 minutes walk.

The owner tries hard and we would recommend them. We would happily stay there again.

Great location within walking distance to everything (we even walked over from the railway station wheeling our suitcases, so you know it wasn't too far away!) It's a lovely historic building, and has a good breakfast selection. But best of all were the very, very helpful people. What more could we want?

My family stayed in the Carlton House Hotel for 3 nights in the beginning of August. It was very good value for 2 double rooms and the location was wonderful. The short walk into York was no problem at all and it saved all the hassle of having to park the car in the town or catch the bus. The car park is small but we left our keys with the proprietors and they were happy to move it when necessary which was nice of them. The rooms were reasonable size and my husband and daughter slept well in the beds (unfortuantely I am rather more fussy - but as we are used to sleeping on a water bed it is no surprise really). The shower rooms were modern and good sized and I really liked the fact that they left us fresh bottles of water and biscuits every day. The Hotel has loads of charm and some great character features which were welcome respite from the Holiday Inn type of accomodation. The breakfast was just fantastic and although limited in choice more than made up for it by being so perfectly cooked and fresh. The staff in the breakfast room were lovely and friendly too. We were recommended an Italian restaurant by the owner and were not disappointed as it was delicious. We also recommend Brigantes, a non smoking pub a short walk from the Hotel towards the city. The food was delicous.

The only small negatives I could say were that the rooms were not vacuumed every day ( but I am dead fussy on cleanliness) and that the checking in and out process whilst very efficient and not unfriendly lacked any particular charm or warmth ( not even a polite "did you enjoy your stay or was everything okay"), from the proprietoress . As I say minor things but the hotel was such good value and the location so great and the breakfast so wonderful that I would definately recommend it to others.

P.S. The Hotel is on a busy main road so if you are a light sleeper bring earplugs.

We've just returned from an extended trip to the UK and Scotland. With one exception(which turned out great) we depended on Trip Advisor reviews to help with our booking decision. Carlton House is located about a ten minute walk from from Old York. Since we are walkers this distance was was no trouble at all. Indeed, we discovered a couple of very nice pubs on the way! Our room was beautifully done with a great shower and superior bedding. Our English breakfast was served to our exact order and enjoyed in a very nicely done Breakfast room. Mark Richardson, our host, couldn't have been more helpful. Since we were in a rental car, parking was a key issue for all of our stops. Carlton House had safe and secure parking on the property. As fairly experienced travelers, we've learned to sort through the "BS," reviews - good and bad - that are posted on some sites. As a result of careful research we've rarely been disappointed by our bookings. The Carlton House exceeded our expectations.

We stayed at the Carlton House Hotel for 2 nights in June. We had chosen this hotel based on the many positive reviews on this site. We have to say we were disappointed in the room and appalled with the poor attitude of the managers and would not recommend this hotel to others. Our triple room was a good size, however the decor was mismatched and tired looking, and the beds were very hard.. There was a miniscule television ( 12") and only one of the 3 beds had reading lamps. The hotel is situated on a very busy street with many buses, ambulances etc. going past. Our room was located at the front and it was so hot and stuffy that we had to keep the windows open at night. The street noise made sleep impossible. The first night our TV wouldn't work, but when we went to the front desk at 8:30pm to speak to someone, we found a note stating that reception was closed and giving a phone number to call in case of emergency. We also had an issue with the parking ,which is in a tiny space behind the hotel. We ended up having our car blocked in by someone whom the manager had allowed to park for the day without leaving their keys. We were very unhappy with his handling of this situation. Not only did he not seem the least bit apologetic, he accused us of telling him we wouldn't be using our car that day- a total fabrication, and that we shouldn't complain since they didn't charge extra for the parking!!
All in all, we got the distinct impression that the front desk management were not interested in customer service and didn't really want to be there, let alone have us there.

Management response from Mark Richardson, Owner/Manager.

Dear Reviewer
Firstly i would like to thank you and your family for choosing The Carlton House Hotel during your visit to York, please accept our apologies that your stay was not up to your expectations following other satisfied guests reviews on The Tripadvisor website.

Carlton House Hotel is a hotel within a Georgian Terrace House dating back to 1830 and located on The Mount The Roman Gateway to the City from the South. Ideally located 10 mins stroll by foot into the City. This description tells you we are on the main road, not an ideal choice for those like yourself looking for an 'Out of Town Getaway'. On the weekend of your stay the weather was exceptionally hot for June and no one escaped the hot stuffyness which York was subjected to and unfortnately 4 Diamond bed and breakfasts do not usually have the benefit of air conditioning.

My Wife, myself and 2 young children live on the premises, although the hotel is manned 99% of the time occasionally it is nice to take time out as a family, as we did on the Saturday night of your stay as we expected most guests would not to be in the hotel, neverless we were back home by 10pm. It appeared the channels on the 14 " tv in your room had been de-tuned, a matter I rectified the next morning as soon as you told me.

We have 13 rooms at The Carlton House and the ' tiny space behind the hotel ' our car park has 9 parking spaces. On an average weekend there are 7 maybe 8 cars in the car park as people car share and come on the train. We try our very hardest to park cars so that if guests want to use them during their stay they are not blocked in, occasionally asking guests to leave their keys at reception if they are blocking other cars in.
York has an ongoing problem with parking and car parking charges are in excess of £12 per day. Occasionally guests who have checked out ask to leave their cars until later in the day, as had happened when you stayed with us. On the Sunday morning you gave me your keys back saying 'thank you, won't be needing them anymore today' taking that as said I allowed a GUEST who was checking out to leave their car in the car park until late afternoon which unfortunately blocked your car in.
During our conversation in the car park I said that parking was at a premium in York and we let guests who have checked out leave their cars if we can do, not you shouldnt complain since we dont charge for parking, this being a total fabrication on your behalf.

On arrival at our hotel your wife seemed some what disgruntled, unable to even give me eye contact. I tried to be as helpfull as I could at check-in offering to carry your cases to your room ( which you refused ) reccomending restaurants ( which weren't suitable ? ) all to no avail. It was apparent then that your stay was not going to be an enjoyable one. My only advise for you is when selecting a hotel in future pick somewhere that has a 5 star rating, has 24 hour reception, fully air conditioned with designated parking, but you will have to pay a little more than the £95 tarriff you
paid at The Carlton House.
