“Very convenient”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013

A beautiful guest house, with very easy and secure parking on the fringe of York with some nice touches. About 10 minutes walk from Monks Gate, so extremely easy to walk to and from town.

The house is lovely, but the decor is horribly dated and claustrophobic. It has lots of lovely original features and fittings, along with the tackiest prints in 1970s frames, and awful carpets and curtains - but don't let that out you off. It really is clean and comfortable.

Our bedroom with a 4 poster bed was cluttered, small and confusing on the eye, but everything worked, and it was very comfortable.

The cooked English breakfast was outstanding on both mornings, and the staff are very friendly. It has a little Co-op right opposite for anything else you need.

Really convenient for a couple of nights in York

We arrived by taxi from the train station (7 pounds) and had a lovely welcome by June who has been here for 35 years. She was extremely knowledgeable on the area and even offered to pick us up should we get lost or separated on our outings. It is a lovely Victorian home built in 1869 for a prominent family. There is a beautiful curved stained glass window on the landing.

It is a 15 minute walk into town and in the evening we caught a taxi to dinner within the city walls which was 5 pounds.

We were here for 3 nights and stayed in Room 15, which is a family room with a king size four poster bed and two singles. It overlooks the park / bowling green and has a beautiful Yew tree outside with black birds eating the berries. The bathroom is a lovely and modern (although cosy) and has a wonderful strong shower. My only fault was there were no rails to hang hand towels or bath towels. There is a hook on the bathroom door and a hook on the main door.
Beds are super comfy and the room is absolutely spotless!!

The service at breakfast could not be faulted, very friendly and attentive. You get what you order quite quickly. Being vegetarian I found their vegetarian hot breakfast adequate, but would recommend that they look at Linda McCartney or Frys sausages in future as they are far tastier than the potato and onion one I got. I stuck to the porridge after that and it was delicious. Other hot breakfast options available with a vast array of of fresh fruit and stewed fruit, yogurts, muesili and cereals.

Overall we were extremely happy at Ascot House and would come back again.

Room Tip: Room 15 is large with a king size four poster bed and two singles. It is on the 2nd level, overlooki...

We stayed here for three nights last spring. The house is conveniently located and reasonable walking distance into the town centre. The parking area was a bit cramped, but we had a place each day. We received a very warm welcome and were provided with a number of suggestions for dining in the area. Our room was well furnished and had a brand new bathroom attached. We were on the first floor overlooking a quiet park. The breakfast was outstanding with a wonderful choice of continental and full English. The lounge was a welcoming and quiet refuge at the end of each day. We highly recommend York House.

This accommodation was a wonderful choice for our stay at York. Easily walking distance to the outer wall and main attractions. Price was quite reasonable. Breakfast was lovely and the service was warm and welcoming. Our family room had a king and 2 singles which made the girls happy, they didnt have to share. The building itself gives a bit of an old worldy feel which helps with the overall ambiance for the region.

Parked on the road (restricted from 9-2) as we were only staying one night. Had a terrible time finding the place, as there are various restrictions on the roads we needed. Directions were not very detailed. Carry on right into the centre past the railway station and over the river
The room was lovely however and the people very friendly. Even our dog was welcomed with her own dog bowl.

My boyfriend and I have just returned from a lovely 2 night stay at Ascot House In York. The house is a really beautiful building with gorgeous features outside and inside and set in a nice quiet location, a 15 minute walk from York centre. The staircase with it's stained glass windows is really something,

The location was fine for us as we liked the walk but if not, a taxi doesn't cost much as it's only a short ride. We used the car park at the back of the hotel, which was really handy and secured at night, although there isn't a lot of room to park. This was not a problem to us as we didn't use the car while there, but could be a problem if you did want to come and go you may struggle getting back in.

Our room, no 16, was on the first floor and was petite but lovely with a gorgeous four poster bed, which I didn't know we were getting, so that was a bonus and the bed was lovely and comfy. Perfect. The room was furnished with lovely things and was very clean. The bathroom was modern, spotless and well looked after with a really good shower. The owners and staff all are welcoming, helpful and looked after us really well. The full english breastfast was superb, you couldn't ask for a better start to the day, it was delicious. Plenty of other breakfast options too, but you couldn't beat the cooked food.

I'd been to York before recently and love it, but my boyfriend hadn't been since he was a child and loved it too, He was very happy to sample the local Samuel Smith's beers in the vast array of pubs one along the river and down a gorgeous residential street called the Wellington! We also found great food at the Mason's Arms once night, humongous portions!!!!

We had a wonderful visit, taking in all the charm of the gorgeous buildings and history everywhere and the York hospitality. We also really enjoyed visiting York 's most haunted pub, The Golden Fleece in the centre, which was wonderfully spooky, but cosy and wonky inside and had great live music. We also loved the much flooded Kings Arms pub by the river, absolutely fascinating and great beer.If you are a cat lover the Cat Gallery on Stonegate, sells nothing but cat related gifts, pictures and bits and pieces is amazing to look round.

We would definitely return to Ascot House and York and would love to visit in the winter, with the real fires, cosy pubs and Christmas lights. If you stay at this hotel you won't be disappointed and if you don't love York there's something wrong!!!

Room Tip: room 16 was beautiful with a gorgeous four poster bed, but not massive. But the hotel and all the ro...

Just returned from a 2 night stay at Ascot House. On arrival the car park was full as it is quite small and you have to double park and leave your keys behind reception, but we parked on the road as during the weekend you can park on the road with no problems. When we arrived the owner asked her son to carry our cases to the room, we were so pleased as we were on the second floor and the steps are quite steep. If we book again I will book earlier and try for a room on the first floor, much easier after a night out and a few drinks.

The room itself was beautifully furnished, light and airy, and the fan came in very nicely when it warmed up.
The beds were really comfortable, don't think I've ever had such a good nights sleep in a b&b.

Breakfast was great. There is a sideboard full of cereals and different fruits, meats and yoghurts and several different fruit juices. Tea, coffee and toast and marmalade are brought to the table and your order for breakfast taken.
I had the traditional breakfast, the sausage was the best I have ever tasted. Service is excellent and nothing too much trouble.

The owner gave us directions into York, only a 10 minute walk and we walked it both ways. There is loads of information in reception and menus for various places locally.

Will definitely recommend to anyone heading to York.
