“Distinct lack of Christian charity”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2013

Well what can I say - £10 each to enter a building which should be free, its a church! What must foreign visitors think of our country when the Church tries to get money from them. Having visited once already a few years ago when there was no charge, we just turned around and left.

“Cynical exploitation that replicates "money lenders in the temple".”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2013

I have visited York Minster before and paid to take pictures, visit the roof take a tour etc; as well as contributing to the "voluntary donations" box. There has always been an area for prayer and contemplationThis time it was different. A queue had formed for what we thought was a tour so our friend, a devout Irish Christian explained we didn't want a tour and asked if we could go in and quietly experience the atmosphere. The steward informed her that we could go in once we'd paid £5 entrance fee.
This is a church for goodness sake. If a distressed stranger arrived at the door seeking solace, would they be asked for payment?
Maybe the Church of England should give these premises to the National Trust and do what they're supposed to.

“a lot more if you go downstairs!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2013

The minster is superb, the display of the restoration of the windows interesting and informative, and not too heavy, just leaving you wanting more. Go down into the under croft and you will learn of former buildings on the site from earlier times, and evidence of them. you will see how the tower was saved from collapse not so long ago. An interesting display also covers the different ages of the city and minster site. A full treasury reveals vestments and church vessels over the ages. Look in the crypt and see the rooms in this area and again evidence of earlier work. The entrance fee may at first seem high, but what is in offer makes it well worthwhile.

“A multi-visit experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2013

The great thing about the entry ticket is that it is good for multiple visits. This is important as the Minster is so large and detailed that you need several visits to take it all in.
