“The Smells are memorable.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

This is a classic attraction in York, I visited as a child & an adult.

Rich in history, but lots of fun too.

Although the one thing you leave, talk about and always remember are the aromas.

Love it.

“Really enjoyed it.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

We took our 10 and 8 year olds and we all really enjoyed it. We had pre - booked our tickets on line and were very relieved that we had as it meant we could jump the long queue when we arrived. The enthusiastic staff were great with the kids and helped them to interpret displays and answered their questions. We spent a long time in the first area, using the map to hunt for the various items / treasures. In one area, our children could choose which object / artefact they wanted to learn more about and the member of staff would tell them all about it. This was probably our favourite bit, entertaining and informative. We would definitely reuse our tickets to return within 12 months, it was good fun.

“Good ride, poorly lit displays”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

You enter the Jorvik museum by first queuing for (typically) 15 minutes unless you have pre-booked in which case you go straight to the head of the queue.

One inside, you pay quite a lot for what turns out to be no more than 1 hour to see everything; it's small.

You go downstairs and walk on a glass raised floor which has a poorly lit Viking street under it. There are laminated guides and a few rolling video's around the edge. There are also a couple of guides in Viking clothing who will answer questions.

The best bit is then the ride through reconstructed streets. 4-star this bit (would be 5-star but I remember there used to be "authentic smells" as you traveled through but not this time). I won't say more as it would spoil the surprise here.

Once off the ride (TIP: there's a door to the left that let's you get straight back on for another ride), you then walk by lots of dimly lit displays where exhibits are set back thus preventing more than a couple of people looking at it at any one time.

There are more people dressed in Viking clothing who talk about the exhibits and also one who will (for £2) cast you a Viking coin.

All before you ascend to the obligatory shop. Thankfully that too is on The small side :)

“Cooler for kids”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

Jorvik was fun, but not much more than that.

Pros:
Learned a decent amount about vikings - would have learned more with the guides some groups had who seemed incredibly knowledgeable.
Ride was silly and lots of fun

Cons:
THE SMELL. I couldn't get it out of my hair and clothes. The clothes I wore had to be in the bottom of the suitcase for the rest of the trip.
