Let me start by saying that we received a very warm welcome at Birchfield House. I believe Steve and his wife were on holiday whilst we were staying; however, his daughter looked after us very well and she was extremely friendly and welcoming. So why have I given Birchfield house two stars? Ill try and break it down below.
The first reason is simply the breakfast. Birchfield house offers a self-service breakfast (not cooked). I knew about this in advance; however, what I did not expect was for there to be no fresh fruit or yoghurts – there was literally just cereal or toast and not even any staples like marmite or nutella! When you paying for a B&B wirth this rating and price level, you really do expect some effort on the part of the owner – not just sealed containers of bread and cereal, a toaster and a few fruit juices on a side table.
I’ve knocked off another star because of a few problems with the room itself. Firstly, the carpet in the bedroom was extremely warn and came across like a bathroom mat that had not been washed in several months. Next, the main boiler for the house was in our wardrobe and made noises all night was which was a little disturbing. The bathroom was lovely with a picture of the minster painted on one wall and a full-size roll top bath; however the extractor fan from the bathroom was broken and made an annoying ticking noise every time the light was turned which was extremely annoying. Finally, and this is perhaps my biggest gripe, the bedding we received can only be described straight out of art attack. There was a lovely throw over the bed which initially hid this; however, when we got into bed and pulled it back, we found white children’s bedding that had a paint splash pattern all over it! I am not sure what the reason was behind this: whether there was a lack of bedding or whether it is the owners intention to have fun and playful bedding, however, I simply felt it was not appropriate and ruined a romantic end to the evening.
Finally, I have knocked off one more star because how poor the sound proofing was in our room. The walls were extremely thin and the door was not made from solid wood. This meant that during the night we could here our neighbour opening the bathroom door, going to the toilet and then proceeding to throw up (not sure why they were throwing up but that’s beside the point).
The only other bone I have to pick is the correspondence we received; in particular, the writing style of the owner. The owner writes in a style that’s clearly aimed at capturing your attention with lots of capitalised words and underlining. I just felt that this was somewhat inappropriate: at times it felt rude and patronising, and at other times flat out bizarre. There were also signs in the bedroom that followed this similar style of writing. I don’t know, it’s just this, together with the lack of effort put into the breakfast, made it feel like the emphasis was on the owners running the most hassle free B&B possible.
I do feel a bit bad awarding only 2 stars, as once again the lady who initially met us was extremely friendly and warm. However, I stay in many hotels and B&Bs and I do feel as though this score is justified based on my experiences and the room I was in. Perhaps we got a bit of a duff room but even if that was the case, I booked far in advance and hoped for more.
