“A little gem of a place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

We first found out about the Birchfield whilst we were looking on the Late-Rooms website, but we found it was a lot cheaper to E-mail Steve direct.
Its a lovely little guest-house, just a short walk from the city walls. We were warmly welcomed upon arrival by Steve's daughter, and later we were greeted by Steve himself. He gave us a map of York, and also a few little hints and tips as to which places were worth a visit. The room itself was very nice, with a lovely roll top bath which we had asked for prior to our stay. My girlfriend had fallen in York town centre on our last day and sprained her ankle, Steve saw us limping in and very kindly brought some painkillers to our room. Overall we were really happy with our stay, and would definitely go back. Thanks very much Steve and family for making us feel really welcome!

Thank you so very much for your kind words. Well, they were MOSTLY kind. Not so kind on me, it has to be said ! You have scored a bit hit with my wife. By saying she was my "daughter" ..., you have made her feel 15 years younger, and me 15 years older ! Apart from that, we are very glad you had a great time with us, and Yes, it is best to email us direct. ... USE Tripadvisor's "Email hotel" button, above our page ONE photograph

The owner Steve was very accommodating when I had to change dates due to work commitments, even emailing back from his holiday in Thailand! When we arrived Steve gave us a warm, friendly welcome and gave us his knowledge on York. We actually arrived early but as our room was ready we were able to check in straight away. The location is excellent and walking distance to the town and attractions. The room we had was lovely and more than we had expected. The breakfast was simple, as stated, but lots of choice and plenty of it. The guest house was spotlessly clean throughout. Ill be recommending the guest house to family and friends wishing to visit the city and if we go back for a visit we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. One piece of advice would be to book directly with Steve so he can give you the best room available!

We had a very enjoyable stay at Birchfield - the room, linen and towels were immaculate and beds were very comfy. The continental breakfast was all we needed to start the day. Steve the owner took good care of us, and booking was a breeze. Although it is only a 10 minute walk to the city walls, we recommend taking bikes - Rowntree park is 5 mins away and well worth a visit and having the bikes allowed us to nip and out of town easily (with a 4 year old with sore feet). Our 4 night stay here was a base to visit Whitby (1hour drive across the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors), Scarborough, Flamingoland (40 mins drive) as well as York itself and did not disappoint. Thanks for a great stay. We will definately be back.

Room Tip: Book directly by email and phone for the best rooms.

Best dont book online .. You will get the best room by contacting Steve direct, at "Email Hotel" above.
Our stay was fantastic.steve couldn't do enough for us. Greeted with a very warm welcome to then be shown to the best suite. Steve had organised for us to have a map of the town centre, marking on it great places to drink and eat. He gave me advice before hand of where to park etc.
The room was lovely. I would not hesitate to come here again and I would highly recommend it to my friends and family. Thanks Steve ;)

We booked this place at quite short notice and Steve was a treasure from the beginning. You know you will have a good time when even his (very prompt) replies to our initial emails were so friendly. He described the room as on the small side but if this is his description of small the other rooms must be palatial! Beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean it was more than we could have hoped for. Breakfast was a continental buffet (you are told this before booking) and was plentiful and set you up for your day. It was also wonderful that Steve was also on hand to offer advice on what to do that day and always with a twinkle in his eye. He could only accommodate us for two nights but took the time to arrange our additional night at another local B&B. Now that is service beyond the usual. Thank you for our wonderful stay. Also, a wee tip, to experience the service we did you are always best to book the hotel direct with Steve. You will always get the same service but he can tailor tour stay to what suits you best.

Room Tip: All rooms quiet but book direct with the place

me and my husband spent 2 nights here for our anniversary and all we can say is that it was lovely and well recommended. the room was spacious, clean and quiet. breakfast was ok, we enjoy a full english but weren't expecting it as it was clearly stated just toast, crumpets etc. we certainly felt like we got good value for money and a plus side is its close to wetherspoons where you can grab cheap food and drink if you enjoy this kind of thing. there wre loads of things to do in york and we felt our time flew in. if you enjoy bella italia like we do, try to get hold of an open top bus guide as there was a 25% discount in it (which we didnt find until the day after we'd been!). i would definately recommend york and this guesthouse
