“Little gem of a hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

We stayed here for my sister's hen celebrations during the May bank holiday weekend. We had a lovely stay. The staff were extremely personable and helpful.

The main building is a stunning period property. We stayed in one of the converted alms cottages which are set back from the main part of the hotel. Our room slept 5 and had a large bathroom. The beds were very comfortable and the bathroom was well stocked with little soaps and other goodies.

It is brilliantly placed and within walking distance of the main features of this beautiful historical city.

I was very surprised to learn of its 2 star status. The hotel is finished to a very high standard. Perhaps it simply has limited 'extras' e.g. there is no wifi. That said, I had ample 3G/4G reception so that didn't bother me.

10-15 minute walk from the railway station. Staff very friendly, hotel comprises of different buildings from different centuries. Beautiful small garden area. The breakfast was excellent with very varied selection of choices at the buffet and the cooked breakfast was a nice size i.e. healthy portions. The ladies toilets near the reception of the hotel smelled divine! We had a twin and double room booked which where a reasonable size and were located in the building with the reception, bar and dining area. To have a room in the older part of the hotel I assume must cost more. As requested with the booking, had quiet rooms located next to each other. Took around 15 minutes to walk to the York Castle museum and/or into the town of York, so very convenient.

Although the breakfast was very good, thought it was rather expensive at around £9/head if booked in advance, other wise it was over £10 if booked on the day. The stairwell up to the rooms smelt a bit unpleasant....could the same air fresheners from the toilets be used here? The twin room we had looked a tad "tired" i.e. ready for redecorating so Average score for the rooms. Did not end up using the swimming pool as it also looked a bit "tired" also.

Last minute booking and a great stay! We decided to stay in York one more day so finding a place was a bit challenging! We chose well. Lady Middletons made York a very walkable city. Would stay there again!

I suspect that guests' experiences are going to be based wholly on the room in which they stayed and, when there is such a terrific variety of accommodation, this is bound to mean that not everyone is happy. However, having coughed up for an Executive Room, I can't think when I've had better accommodation ever, regardless of the star rating of the hotel. Our room was vast, in perfect order and with many thoughtful touches. The bathroom was stunning and the overall level of cleanliness was exceptional.

All staff we encountered were friendly and willing to offer help and advice to a couple of York first time visitors. Breakfast was served promptly and the restaurant was not cramped in any way. We didn't eat at the hotel in the evenings so I can't comment on that but we had no complaints about the food offered at breakfast time.

It wasn't a cheap stay but this is York; I certainly felt we received good value for money. I will not hesitate to book Middletons again if we return to York but I'd certainly want a guarantee of the same room!

We we placed in the 'Old School House' as pictured in the advert.
However there is a Collection of historical houses in a complex, including a swimming pool.
The reception and dining facilities are modern additions.
We were warmly welcomed and had help with the luggage sine there was no lift to our room.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask, if you have difficulties in climbing stairs, for a ground floor room. Am not sure o...

Stayed Friday night midway through a training course in York. This was the perfect break, the staff were lovely and gave 100% attention despite it being busy with check ins. The room was spotless and the massive double bed very comfortable. The bathroom of our deluxe room was wet room style (guessing it was one of the disabled access rooms but did not feel any different) and the toiletries of high standard. We ate out but returned for drinks in the hotel bar which we loved, amazing room, really comfy and warm. The lady on the bar went out of her way to make us welcome, very friendly. Slept well. Breakfast didn't disappoint, lots of staff around to make sure we had plenty tea and coffee and the cooked breakfast was really good. Enjoyed some of the continental breakfast and homemade muesli even though we were full of bacon!!!! Would stay again without doubt!

Stayed at the Middleton from 3rd to 6th April.
The hotel was immaculate.
We had concerns that we had been allocated a 'small' room. However the room was more than adequate.
Interesting history about the building when it was previously used as a working mill.
The staff were very attentive and could not have been more helpful.
Breakfast was massive, with a huge variety to chose from.
Had a meal in the restaurant on the Sunday night. We could not fault the food although r the menu seems so elaborate that it was sometimes difficult to understand what was on offer. Suggestion would be to use less words to describe the meal, plain English would suffice. After all a sausage is a sausage.
The hotel bar has a great selection of malt whisky available.
The location is very central.
