Just returned from a great weekend at the Abbey Guest House. Owners Gill and Alec extremely friendly and the rooms immaculate. Fresh flowers in rooms and lovely comfy beds. Breakfasts freshly cooked and great choice. Really tasty. Nice stroll into city, only 10 minutes or so either along river or through gardens. will definately be back.

The lady owner is kind and hospitable, our room was sparkling clean and nicely decorated, and the location is fabulous. The man (her husband?) was, we found, rather chilly, so I wouldn't say we got a ravingly hospitable welcome although he was okay - I had just been expecting more after reading the reviews. He showed us to our room and that was it, he disappeared and we saw no more of him. No guest lounge, and steep narrow stairs gave a cramped feel. However I gather they are new owners and are in the middle of updating and renovating it so I would imagine they'll get round to doing the hall soon. Our room was very pleasant, although with a dull outlook over the car park, and breakfast was fine. The lady owner was very chatty and pleasant and made up for the slightly offhand reception from the man. Parking is just behind the house which actually fronts on to the river - beautiful location and incredibly handy for the railway museum. Pretty well everything else in York is a delightful riverside stroll. I think the general lack of anywhere to spread out and relax might make me think twice before coming back again, just a little bit, but then I don't know what other accommodation is like. I woudl guess in a popular tourist city like york you would have to pay a lot for more space. And perhaps the guy was just having an off day, as we DID stay in the height of the tourist season and he said he hadn't stopped for weeks. I'm hesitating between giving this 4 or 5, but in the end it's a 4 because it wasn't a great experience although it was pretty good.

I stayed here with my boyfriend and another 4 friends, we're all aged between 39 and 46 years old (we all like to Party still and love York's nightlife). A fantastic spot to stay, short walk to City Centre, lovely view over river and easy to get to and free parking! Cracking breakfast, good decor, lovely & clean all round and great hosts. Would definately recommend and will try to book back there next time we're looking to stay in York.

Booked 4 out of the 5 rooms for a family visit to York for a graduation ceremony. Hosts very friendly and helpful. great central location. Just a short walk along or over the river to the main sites. Excellent breakfast.. right down to the fried bread .. a rare treat.

spent 2 nights in this guest house in the beautiful city of york. location is good. it's around 10mins of step-less luggage walk from the train station though the path could be a bit muddy by the riverside esp when it's raining. the house is situated right next to river and our room is one looking directly over to the river with a metal frame 4-poster inside. room felt airy, spacious and clean. bed was very comfy. simple but atmospheric decor which my gf exclaimed about when entering the room not knowing what i have reserved in advance. shower room is clean as well, the only complaint would be water pressure could be better.

well-cooked english breakfast served downstairs in a nice room with view to river through doors with floor-to-ceiling windows.

gill and alec were pleasant hosts. we didnt talk much cos we're not native speakers but i'm quite sure they'll be of help to any queries.

  • Liked — location, room quality, cleanliness and view
  • Disliked — water pressure could be better. only one chair in the room
