The lady owner is kind and hospitable, our room was sparkling clean and nicely decorated, and the location is fabulous. The man (her husband?) was, we found, rather chilly, so I wouldn't say we got a ravingly hospitable welcome although he was okay - I had just been expecting more after reading the reviews. He showed us to our room and that was it, he disappeared and we saw no more of him. No guest lounge, and steep narrow stairs gave a cramped feel. However I gather they are new owners and are in the middle of updating and renovating it so I would imagine they'll get round to doing the hall soon. Our room was very pleasant, although with a dull outlook over the car park, and breakfast was fine. The lady owner was very chatty and pleasant and made up for the slightly offhand reception from the man. Parking is just behind the house which actually fronts on to the river - beautiful location and incredibly handy for the railway museum. Pretty well everything else in York is a delightful riverside stroll. I think the general lack of anywhere to spread out and relax might make me think twice before coming back again, just a little bit, but then I don't know what other accommodation is like. I woudl guess in a popular tourist city like york you would have to pay a lot for more space. And perhaps the guy was just having an off day, as we DID stay in the height of the tourist season and he said he hadn't stopped for weeks. I'm hesitating between giving this 4 or 5, but in the end it's a 4 because it wasn't a great experience although it was pretty good.
