“National Trust property that is excellent to visit whilst in City Center”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2012

Opposite York Minister this is a delightful property to visit. The usual entrance fees apply but its almost worth signing up for Nat Trust mbrship as you can recoup the fee within a few visits to the properties in the UK. The guides are really helpful and its a pleasant way to spend an afternoon in the city.

“An unusual property”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2012

This is a very unusual property. Former home of industrialist Frank Green who gave it to the National Trust in 1930. He was an avid collector and laid out rooms in different styles, the contrast being a particularly enjoyable aspect to the visit. The Great Hall with its minstrel gallery is striking - you see the pendulum for the clock in the hall but only see the clock itself when you go upstairs. various pieces of furniture have their own appeal and often seem not to sit coherently in their location. Clothing can be worn in the King's bedroom and there is the expected ghost in the cellar - a typical feature of any visit to a York building! The house is still being redeveloped as it was once split into 3 separate abodes and it closes on Fridays to make it available for weddings. As usual for the NT, quality tearoom down in the cellar area.

“A pleasant hour or so”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2012

A freebie with the National Trust. This is an ongoing project ( the new rooms previously a flat) but very interesting. A very inspiring home.
