“Good hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2008

This was a good hotel.

Rooms were clean, comfortable and presentable.

Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Only issue we had was with a loud and very slow running sink, but for one night this wasn't a problem.

  • Liked — Was of a very good standard

My husband and I stayed at the York Marriot from 5-8-08 until 8-8-08, on our 'mini-moon' break, following our wedding on the 1st. HE chose the hotel!!!!!!!

On arrival, we were informed we were to be upgraded, and we were to be in the Penthouse, with a view of York Racecourse!! Naturally, we were delighted!

The room was at the far end of the hotel, on the top floor (of course, being a penthouse!) and it was a bit of a walk to get there, but none the less, well worth it!!

We were delighted when we opened the door, to find an absolutely beautiful large room, with superkingsize bed, sofa, 2 chairs, and table, a large side unit, comprising 2 minibars, and drawers. There was a balcony, with a wooden table, and 4 chairs, and an amazing view of the racecourse.

There was also a dressing area, with double wardrobe, ironing board, iron, hairdryer and trouser press. Through this area, was the bathroom, complete with twin sinks, a bath with shower over, and a seperate extra large shower cubicle, and toilet.

Room service was prompt, and friendly. Comp newspaper each morning. Fresh fruit and water in the room.

We used the resturant twice in the evenings - most staff very friendly and efficient.

I would comment on the menus, as it was unclear that vegetables did not come as standard with some of the mains, for example, I had a delicious salmon fishcake one night, all done very nicely, but there was no veg with it at all. Veg was offered as a side dish, at an additional £2.95. Not very good, and I did overhear diners at a nearby table finding that when their steak came, all that was on their plate, was a steak - no potatoes or veg.

Breakfasts were lovely. A good choice of hot cooked, cold meats, cereal, breads, fruit etc.

We didnt use the pool, but it looked very nice. Smallish, and when we passed, there was always at least 3 or 4 people in it.

I realise the room we had is not a standard room, but the fact the hotel had 'somehow' found out it was our honeymoon and were able to upgrade us was impressive and worthy of comment.

We would definitely stay here again, penthouse or no penthouse!!!!

  • Liked — The luxurious feel to the place
  • Disliked — Not central to York, but a nice walk in to centre.

Stayed for 2 nights b&b with superbreaks 2 adults and 2 small children on arrival found scaffolding to left of building but at reception was re assured that we would not have a room facing this. Bedroom was lovely and clean it was very warm in rooms even though air con was on fall blast. The children were very happy, they enjoyed the small swimming pool, great steam room and gym which i think has just been refurnished, staff in hotel were at all times very friendly , breakfast was great , the views from the dining room overlook york racecourse which was nice, the gardens of the hotel were great with a tennis court , plenty of space for kids to have a run about. The evening meal was a little dissapointing as it took 25 mins to arrive at the table ,i would recommend eating in york as it was a little expensive. There is a bus that takes you into york every 10 mins fam ticket all day return costs £7 if you want to walk from hotel to centre it will take 25 mins .York great for family break, the marriott offers 25% off the jorvik centre ask at reception. If you are intending to go to York dungeon do not take a child under 8 inside.Restaurant in York i would recommend is Russells of coppergate great yorkshire puds.I will definetly return in the near future thanks marriott for a pleasant stay.

  • Liked — cleanliness and great service
  • Disliked — quite a long walk to our room from lift/stairs, air con ?

Very nice hotel, I believe recently refurbished. The public areas are not huge with the reception, restaurant, bar and pool in a small space. However ,this space is used well and the pool, again though small, was adequate and relatively quiet. We ate in the bar both nights and the staff were approachable and friendly. The restaurant staff at breakfast were also friendly, if a little rushed. The bedroom was very nice, large for a Marriott with all the usual amenities and the extremely comfortable Marriott bedding. A relaxing stay.

  • Liked — Usual Marriott service and quality.

What a relaxing and wonderful weekend. My husband and I have just returned from a 2 night stay at this hotel in York. Checking in was easy - we asked for a room with a view as there seemed to be scaffolding all around the front of the hotel - didn't fancy waking up to that!! No problem - we had a side ways view of the York Races. The room was extremely well maintained and clean. Lots of goodies in the room - from teas, coffees and biscuits to a sewing kit! Ice if required. Flat screen TV, iron and board and a hairdryer. Just what a girl needs. The swimming pool was small but just right for a relaxing dip. The bar was very quiet. £3.45 for a pint of Murphys £1.75 half a lager. The restaurant was very open and welcoming. I could not falter the staff. They tended to your every need - at breakfast there were more staff than guests!!! Breakfast was anything and everything - from your normal cooked breakfast to continental - smoked salmon, muffins, lots of different breads - various fresh fruits, smoothies - I could go on................ We ate one evening meal in the hotel. Again a nice choice and it was not as expensive as you may think. It came to the same amount as we had paid the previous evening in York centre. The hotel also had a beauty parlor - facials started at £25 for 45 mins.

We parked our car at the hotel. The receptionist suggested we take the bus into York - £2.70 return per adult and the buses run every 10 minutes from across the road. Ideal. Lots to do in York - not enough time! We'll be going back and may even stay at this hotel again.

My daughter and I stayed here for a long weekend and really enjoyed it. The staff were always pleasant and helpful. My daughter has food allergies and the dining room staff (we had the breakfast included) were good about getting her food that she could eat (gluten free).

The location is a bit out of town. We took the local bus into town each day, but walked back in the evening. The road was not too busy and felt safe.

The beds were comfortable, the room large, and everything very clean.

York is a wonderful town, full of history, and not too crowded. If I went back, I might try to stay at one of the many interesting B&B's we passed by. The Marriott was certainly fine, but the main reason for choosing it was that I had enough credit card points to almost stay for free.

  • Liked — dietary accomodation and room quality
  • Disliked — distance from town

I recently stayed at this hotel on business and was so impressed that I'm tempted to book a weekend break there. The reception staff were courteous and went out of their way to be helpful.

My double room was spacious with a very comfortable bed and modern decor. There was a slight maintenance problem with my room but the night staff couldn't have been more helpful and put me into the penthouse room for the night instead which had a fantastic balcony and view of the racecourse.

The restaurant evening meal and breakfast were very tasty with plenty of choice, however I do not recommend the sandwiches from the bar menu which were very disappointing.

All in all a great stay.
