“a little gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2012

My daughter and I have just returned from a two day stay at this guest house. Its nicely situated slightly away from the bustle and noise, but an easy 10 min stroll to reach the city. The whole house is well decorated and maintained, our room was spotlessly clean and well equipped. Karen was very friendly, helpful and cooked a great, tasty, plentiful breakfast. She has put together a comprehensive guide to the area including ideas of where to eat which was useful. The on road parking by permit, which Karen provides, is great because you can just forget about your car for your entire stay! We got a taxi back from the city centre one evening and it only cost us £4, much cheaper than a car park! I would definitely recommend the Acer to anyone visiting York and looking for a comfortable, clean place to stay.

Room Tip: Our twin room was on the third floor which may not suit everyone. However Karen is so nice I'm s...

Stayed with my wife on a Saturday night in May and we both thought the room was lovely. Clean, quiet, good shower, close to the city centre, excellent breakfast, friendly owner. Also, nicely decorated, and there were few nice touches here and there which helped it to stand out from the crowd. We'll be staying again.

It's great that the Reduced Shakespeare Company were on top form.

Thank you for the review; it's super to know that we "stand out from the crowd" as there are over 180 B&Bs to choose from in York. All of that money spent on refurbishment has paid off!

Karen.

This is our 4th visit, but the 1st time since it's been refurbished. We were not disapointed, the room was spotless, well equiped and tastefully decorated with some nice finishing touches. The breakfast was lovely with plenty of choice. Karen is very friendly and made us feel very welcome. Will definately stay here again on our next visit to York.

Room Tip: The four poster room is well worth the money.

I am so pleased that you like the refurbishment. It's lovely for someone who saw the "before" to comment in such a positive way on the "after".

Thanks,

Karen.

We regularly visit York for the theatre & wish we had found the Acer Guest House before this trip. The York races were on & the road was closed by the Police but Karen made sure we had the paperwork to get us onto Scarcroft Hill without any problems. The room was comfortable, very clean & stylishly furnished. Breakfast was a real treat with a good selection of cereals & yoghurts; the freshly cooked vegetarian & traditional breakfasts were hot & tasty. Hope we will be able to stay next time we are in York. Thank you Karen.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post this fantastic review.

During racing the police cordon off the street from about noon until 1pm and from about 5pm to 7pm; only during racing. This is because we are ideally located midway between the city, 10 minutes walk one way, and the racecourse grandstand, 10 mimutes walk the other. As we are on a quiet residential street the police have decided to keep all of the race goers away from us. This is great! Residents of the street and my guests are free to come and go across the police cordon; I simply make sure that my guests have the police identification.

The Acer is only minutes away from the action but remains very tranquil - a huge bonus at race times.

We needed a room in York with little notice and we didn't want to spend a fortune but we like a nice quiet night's sleep in quality surroundings.
Karen was most helpful when we booked by 'phone a day in advance and we even got a discount !
The guest house is spotlessly clean. Our room was small but well equipped and the bed was comfortable with crisp white linen.Breakfast was superb with a wide choice ( there was Vegemite as well as Marmite !) seved in the pleasant little dining room.
We had an evening meal in York but one is welcome to bring take aways back to the room and cutlery etc. can be arranged.
The hotel is situated a 10 minute walk from the city centre on a quiet residential street. An additional benefit was that we could get a parking permit from Karen and leave our car there for free whilst we visited York.
All in all an enjoyable stay with a friendly thoughtful host.

Thank you for this great review.

I don't do a lot of discounting (it's can be a slippery slope downwards) but if I have only one room remaining empty and a guest calls at the last minute it seems churlish to charge full price! Please don't be offended if no discounts are available though. We are generally too busy to cut our prices and The Acer represents great value for money at any time.

My family and I stayed in York for only one night as part of our tour of England and Scotland (hint: stay longer if you can, it's lovely!). We found Acer Guest House to be quite comfortable and convenient. Karen is a very nice person who goes out of her way to accommodate her guests. We arrived during a bit of a warm spell and she was able to dig up an extra fan for our room. She also gave us a wonderful map that she literally drew on so we would know exactly where to walk in order to reach the city center (ten minutes pleasant walk through a safe neighborhood). As with every place we stayed on this trip, there are plenty of stairs to climb to get to your room. The room itself (the family room with ensuite facilities) was nicely decorated, spacious, clean and comfortable with little extras that make staying a pleasure. Breakfast was delicious with a variety of foods from which to chose.
This is a wonderful place to stay. My teenage daughter has "decided" to relocate to York after college, so if/when we return to this lovely city, we will definitely stay again at Acer!

You should have stayed longer! Sorry that we were fully booked and unable to accommodate you on your way back through York from Scotland.

I hope thet you all got used to the long, light summer nights.

I came to York (from Canada) for a 7-night stay late in May for some work at the uni, and stayed at Acer (on the recommendation of my wife who had visited a few weeks previous). I had a really comfortable stay. What I liked: really comfortable bed, friendly/helpful owner, GREAT breakfasts--and I tried almost everything on the menu--and good location for the town centre and the university. I had stayed at a different B&B in York earlier in the year, but this was hands-down better, and just had a much nicer, better-quality feel to it. Thanks, Karen!
