“Adequate for short stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2008

We stayed here for one night at short notice at beginning of May because most places we tried in York were full. After reading some of the reviews, we were not expecting much but were pleasantly surprised. Yes it does seem a little tired in some areas but was clean and comfortable, the staff were welcoming and the continental breakfast was enough to keep us going until lunchtime. The public areas were clean and tidy and two of the staff kept the small breakfast section stocked up throughout the time we were eating.
Our room was very clean, the bathroom adequate, water was hot and there was tea & coffee facilities in the room. While it was comfortable enough for one or two nights, I would not stay for any longer but surely they are only meant for quick stays, hence the name Express Holiday Inns?
Also must agree with some of the reviewers about the Dormouse pub next door. They do really good value-for-money meals throughout the day and there's plenty of seats outside if the weather is good.
I would definitely use this one again for an overnight stay.

I stayed at this hotel recently and am surprised it's still standing. It is so shabby and the company obviously haven't put any money into maintaining it. There was ONE member of staff on each day - so obviously the norm. This poor girl had to run around and clean our room because the housekeeping didnt bother and check-in all the people arriving.

The rooms were filthy. Duvets thin and stained. Beds JUST standing with wobbly legs. Duvet sheets dont fit the duvet cover!Carpets filthy and stained. Dusty as heck. Just awful. Would never return or recommend anyone goes there.

Breakfast ok but served in the reception area. Think there were about 8 or 9 tables with 2 chairs at each. Practically in the kitchen aswell as the check-in desk. Just tiny area.

No lifts. No anything really. Kettle in room broke. Shower disgusting! YELLOW walls and water cold. Receptionist explained this was normal as so many people using the shower at the same time and the boiler couldnt cope. Public toilets next to the desk were the same. Very unpleasant.

We stayed here for 5 nights - stupid i know - we should have left after the first! We got a pretty good idea of how this place is run. Poor staff is all I can say. Did her best but what more could we ask her to do - other than demolish the place and rebuild!!!! Over 5 days only saw 2 different members of staff !

We stayed for two nights 4th & 5th April 2008, two rooms, arrival greeted by Mr Grumpy at the reception desk.
Our room was booked as a double confirmed by Mr Grumpy on arrival as a double, but configured as a twin. We rearranged bed ourselves, quicker and easier than speaking to Mr Grumpy again. On moving the beds together revealed the unvacuumed floor and debris from previous occupiers of the room below the bed.
Rooms were basic and ok, but showing their age in decoration.
The adjacent pub just located outside the front door was very good, good quick service, good value and food good.
Breakfast is just as described a DIY continental, with the usual DIY toasting machines, packet cereals and diluted fruit juices, served in a small area off the reception.
On returning back to our hotel on day two, none of our rooms had been made up, no change of towels or anything done. We were not alone apparently only one chamber maid turned up for work, so they simply did not bother to service the rooms!
After a few calls to the desk, the desk now manned by a far happier person, a pleasant girl brought us replacement towels and explained the staff problems to us.
On checking out on our last day, I raised the matter of our rooms being unserviced, the girl on duty was such a contrast to Mr Grumpy, quickly went to speak to the manager and reduced our bill.
It would however make you think about staying again, other than its a good location.

I stayed here on business for one night. What can I say apart from that it is a very average travellers hotel.

Rooms are what you would expect - basic but adequate although a little shabby in places. I agree with others that the walls are paper thin, which means that you can hear people in surrounding rooms and this can be quite disturbing if a group comes in late at night.

Rather off putting was the smell of urine in the toilet area of the bathroom and the fact that the towels smelt as though they had spent the night in a curry restaurant! I was post shower by the time I realised about the towels unfortunately.

Staff service was OK - we didn't see much of them to be honest. The breakfast area is very small. I was there when the place was almost empty but I would imagine if the hotel was busier you would have to fight for a table. There is a complimentary continental style breakfast.

I would agree with others that the food in the pub which is in the same grounds is excellent and well worth using.

Would I say in the hotel again - probably not.

Friday/Saturday night visit. Hotel is fairly easy to find and get to - close to the outer Ring Road and well signposted. Plenty of accessible parking which is well lit at night.
Neat and tidy public areas. Friendly and efficient reception. Plenty of space for the two of us in the well equipped and presented room. Reasonably quiet in the room despite the hotel being busy and our room being close to the stairs. The area is also quiet despite being five minutes from a main arterial road into the City.
Reasonable breakfast with a choice of cereals and breads/jams/fruit but a bit limiting. (adjacent pub/restaurant very handy for evening meals)
We'd be happy to (and will) use this again for future visits.

Pretty average hotel, room quite clean and bed comfy, problems occur during the early morning with doors banging and children screaming and running around but i suppose thats comes with most hotels, quiet at night though which is the main thing. Staff very much 'smile its your job' and not many around car park ok but full in the evening because of pub nextdoor, breakfast just ok although there were no bowls or white bread and no one to ask to get any, we enjoyed this hotel because it was a lovely walk into york took about 25 mins and was very pleasent and interesting apart from the main road, the hotel surrounded by countryside so really nice lots of squirrels and rabbits overall an average stay and cant groan to much.

A very clean hotel with pleasant staff(when you saw them)
However, make sure that if someone in your party has difficulty using stairs, you book a ground floor room as stair lift technology has not reached this hotel yet
The term used by the H.I. website for this hotel mentions breakfast in the "Great Room" the "Great Room" consists of a room off the reception with approx. 10 tables and you must wait for a table if the hotel is full.
Food service area is very cramped unlike other "H I Express hotels.
""Doormouse" pub next door has very good food at reasonable prices.
Would definately stay again (but downstrairs) unti they get lift.
