“lovely stay,great stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2014

just returned from a pleasant stay at the monkbar where we found the staff very pleasant and professional. our spacious room was spotlessly clean and couldn,t fault it in any way. our very enjoyable break fast was served again by pleasant impeccable staff and will stay here on our return visit to York. another plus point for this hotel was the free off road parking facility which other hotels we have stayed at have charged.

Best breakfast service in years - team headed by Michael - nothing too much trouble - what a start to a great day in York - and the sun shone on us as well - result !! Fantastic hotel team every member of staff a joy to speak to.

Good location, next to the City Walls and an easy walk to York Minster; free parking with a fair number of spaces; good breakfast with plenty of choice and generally helpful and unstuffy staff.
On the down side, my room wasn't serviced on one of my three overnights; décor was clean and tidy but rather dated and on price I would say it's only medium value.

We stayed one night in this hotel and paid £135 for bed and breakfast (we think we paid over the odds as we booked quite late for a Saturday night stay in York).
We were in an attic room that was quite large and quirky. However we quickly realised that quirky wasn't going to make up for the issues in the room.
The bed was a small double, the mattress was very uncomfortable, and the duvet wasn't big enough for the bed (it only just covered feet and shoulders at the same time and we aren't overly tall people!).
In addition one of the blinds in a room was broken which meant it couldn't be raised. I did peak behind it and the double glazing unit behind it was also borken with condensation in between the panes so perhaps it deliberately hadn't been fixed.
The bathroom had a bath but no proper shower. There was a shower head connected to the bath taps but no connector to hold it on the wall so you have to hold it over your own head. In addition as the roof of the bathroom sloped it wasn't possible to fully stand upright in the bath so showering was near on impossible.
The bathroom could also have done with a deep clean - there were some stains around the plughole in the sink which needed some elbow grease. The toilet and bath were OK in terms of cleanliness.
There was also a bedside alarm clock that someone (the previous occupants?) had programmed to go off at 1am so we switched it off only for it to go off again at 2am. In the end we just unplugged it.
Our room also overlooked a road which remained busy until quite late and night and was noisy enough to keep us awake.
Breakfast was good and in the hotel restaurant.
Overall given the issues with the bed, noise at night and the non-existent shower I could not recommend this hotel based on our experience.

York is a fantastic city and there are many places to stay, I have stayed at a number of them over the years. This time i chose this hotel because it was convenient for my meetings the next morning and its easy to walk into the city.
I stay at quite afew Best Westerns, and they vary so much as they are franchised. I stayed in one the night before, in Norwich ( see review) and paid £20 less than this one and it was a much nicer hotel.
Whilst this hotel is convenient , its not £100 a night quality . My room was not particularly big, it was on the road facing side with traffic noise and next to the lift shaft . The breakfast was buffet, not a problem, but compared to the £79 a night Norwich stay with a cooked to order breakfast it looked poor value.
I guess York is international famous and comands higher prices, but this shoudl not affect standards.
The room was clean, with the exception of the previous occupants soap left in the shower !
So all in all, its an average stay and I know you can do a lot better in York..

Room Tip: Go towards rear to avoid traffic noise.

I was excited to book this hotel due to it's location near the university my son attends, as it is a short walking distance from his dorm room, but was soon disappointed. Whilst the outside of the hotel looks nice, the interior of the hotel and rooms seemed a bit dated. I was disappointed to learn that the room was only moderately clean, was incredibly warm, the beds and pillows exceptionally firm, the Wifi connection poor, and a broken shower nozzle, which I reported to the front desk during departure. This hotel is not cheap by any means, and I didn't feel I got the value for the price I paid for my two night stay. I would suggest other hotels in the area before selecting this one; however, if you're in bind, it will meet your basic needs. On a positive note, I found the staff to be very friendly and accommodating.
