Booked with travel agent but NOT before reading reviews on tripadvisor. Chose York for National Railway Museum & Minster and chose Middlethorpe because we needed a top-notch place to stay in case we would rather relax than continue to tour. First reviewed other York UK 4 -star hotels (closer to center of city). We're so glad we chose this location. Middlethorpe stands out in all fields of service: accomodation, restaurant, gardens, etc. We did not feel as if the people were staff for Middlethorpe; they were staff for us! They took our stay personally. The food was magnificent (three rosettes restaurant 2006-2007). If I recall correctly, Tripadvisor reviews -previous to our visit- noted some people missed coffee machines in the rooms. After my visit I must say please leave the in-room coffee machines for the Hilton. The room service coffee would far outperform anything already in-room. Besides it would be inappropriate for coffee makers in the rooms with all that beautiful antique furniture! Spa was gorgeous. People friendly, cheerful, full of life, energy and eager to please. Vast number of activities apparently available year-round. We expect to return here for few days on our next trip to England - of this we're certain.

  • Liked — Service, room, food, staff, ALL
  • Disliked — Did have to travel to city by cab or bus However- the short distance was painless. (Bus steps away)

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for our second anniversary and the entire trip was wonderful. Our room was in the main building and we had a view of both the gardens and courtyard, both of which are extremely pretty. The staff were very professional and polite, but it was nice as they also laughed with you and made you feel very comfortable. There are plums, apples and pears grown naturally on the grounds and we saw rabbits, hedgehogs and ducks scurrying about. The rooms are traditionally styled but have modern amenities such as a TV/DVD player, and the complimentary drink and food in the room was very refreshing. The meals on night time were wonderful, I have an egg intolerance and the chef was amazing, I was told that I could pick any meal that I wanted and it would be tailored to my needs. Overall a fantastic stay and I cannot believe it only has a 3star rating.

My fiancee and Ihave just returned from a wonderful 3 night stay at Middlethorpe.

We stayed in Room 24 in the Courtyard, which was both spacious and extremely comfortable. It was also nice to find little touches such as the complimentary mineral water, biscuits, fruit bowl and daily laundered bathrobes. The early morning tea was fantastic too, just what you need at 8am!

We had breakfast each morning and also afternoon tea on our penultimate day. The quality and presentation of the food could not be faulted and was delicious. In particular afternoon tea on the terrace in the late afternoon sun was one of our highlights, terrific.

As we wanted to see as much of the local attractions as possible, we only spent an hour and a half in the Spa. The facilities that we did use (pool, steam room, sauna and whirlpool) were all excellent.

However, a hotel is only as good as the team that runs it, and we both felt that the level of service we received was pretty much perfect. The welcome we received from Mike on our arrival really set the tone. First impressions count, and Mike was warm, friendly and very welcoming. At reception our check in process was handled quickly and efficiently, a big thumbs up to all the reception staff! All the waiters/waitresses, particularly those at breakfast, were wonderful and a credit to Middlethorpe. Our room was looked after to the highest level and many thanks go to the housekeeping staff! I am aware that there are also many other people such as the laundry staff who work behind the scenes but are still vital and provide a much needed service. So we would like to thank the entire team at Middlethorpe for making our stay so wonderful!

I would definitely recommend this hotel to everyone, and we will definitely be staying there again soon!

I stayed as part of a tour and wish we could have had more than one night at this converted country manor house. I had a very comfortable corner room that looked out on the rear garden and lawn. This hotel/spa would be an excellent, relaxing location from which to explore York and the surrounding countryside, but would also be a super weekend destination in and of itself, with charming grounds, including lovely gardens. The manager and his staff were uniformly gracious and very helpful. I was able to schedule a lovely massage and had a very nice, well-prepared dinner. Weather permitting, the small patio area in back is lovely for cocktails, and since we had wonderful warm weather, I enjoyed this very much.

An excellent one night stay at Middlethorpe - a generous sized comfortable room, excellent staff and lovely surrounds. The spa is also worth the use - we used the pool and sauna with no-one else there!
Highly recommended.
