My boyfriend and I stayed at the Elmbank Hotel in York this weekend, for one night only, inlcuding bed and breakfast. The price was only £49 per night, which we thought was a great bargain having seen some of the photographs on their website.

The staff were friendly upon arrival and we were quickly provided with our room, which was across the road from the main hotel in the separate lodge. The website claims this lodge has been refurbished recently, but it certainly didn't look like it. We found our room after carting our luggage up a few flights of stairs, but had issues getting in the door as there was a large television blocking the doorway!

The room was very small and there was no television (I assume ours was the one outside). Thankfully we were not that interested in watching TV, more seeing York itself. The bathroom was very cramped and the hot water would go on and off intermittently.

The pillowcases were all different colours, as were the towels, and a lot of the linen was worn, some with holes in them.

Overall, the staff were very friendly, apart from one, who called us at 11:05 am to inform us that we were now late for the 11 am checkout and to vacate immediately. The rooms are not up to much, but if you are looking for very basic accomodation, which is within walking distance to York centre (at a push), then this may be the place for you.

  • Liked — staff were friendly
  • Disliked — the rooms were not great and very cramped
  • Tips/Secrets: — ask to stay in the main hotel as I presume it is better than the lodge

Dreadful place - cold, dirty, smelly, and unfriendly staff. Net curtains had big holes in them, toilet seat was disgusting - broken and worn.

I've stayed in better B&Bs at £20 a night. This hotel wanted £83 a night room only.

We cancelled the second night of our weekend stay.

Pictures on the internet are not typical - it is a grim place.

Our weekend away was ruined - we went to stay with our son in York - preferring to sleep on the chairs in his flat.

My friend and I have just spent a few days at this hotel on a bed and breakfast basis, we settled in and found that the room was comfortable and although we expected to have to dine out each night we were pleasantly surprised to find that we could have an evening meal in the hotel. The hotel is 1km away from York centre and after spending all day walking around the centre we were not happy at the thought of having to walk the 1km back into town to eat. The entrance is very grand and the staircase is really old worlde and put us in the mood for travelling back in time while visiting the medieval city. The staff were very attentive and friendly. My partner and I would like to visit with his disabled mother but although it states that there is disabled access to the hotel I did not see any which is a shame as his mother relies on a wheelchair and cannot climb stair. We really enjoyed our stay and I would visit it again with my friend but unfortunately not with my partner and his mother.

we stayed here for one night to celebrate our wedding anniversary. hotel looked lovely staff friendly. room was very basic for the money paid and breakfast was a joke costing 17.00 for two it was dried up and not very appetising. if we went to york again we would be looking for somewhere else to stay.

This Beautiful looking Hotel is a 15-20 minute walk into the City Centre.

The public rooms are lovely very oldey worldy in design. Parking at this hotel is an absolute nightmare.

The rooms are dingy and there is a damp smell the old fashioned eiderdowns needs to be replaced and the decoration is very dreary indeed. If you are unlucky enough to be given a room in the annexe the rooms there are like a cheap old B&B and also smelly too.

Breakfast was included but awful, the quality of food was completely unhealthy and thrown together.

Wouldnt go there again.

  • Liked — the outside of the building and the public rooms
  • Disliked — the smell and the dreary decor
  • Tips/Secrets: — not good value for money - give it a miss
