My boyfriend and I stayed at the Elmbank Hotel in York this weekend, for one night only, inlcuding bed and breakfast. The price was only £49 per night, which we thought was a great bargain having seen some of the photographs on their website.
The staff were friendly upon arrival and we were quickly provided with our room, which was across the road from the main hotel in the separate lodge. The website claims this lodge has been refurbished recently, but it certainly didn't look like it. We found our room after carting our luggage up a few flights of stairs, but had issues getting in the door as there was a large television blocking the doorway!
The room was very small and there was no television (I assume ours was the one outside). Thankfully we were not that interested in watching TV, more seeing York itself. The bathroom was very cramped and the hot water would go on and off intermittently.
The pillowcases were all different colours, as were the towels, and a lot of the linen was worn, some with holes in them.
Overall, the staff were very friendly, apart from one, who called us at 11:05 am to inform us that we were now late for the 11 am checkout and to vacate immediately. The rooms are not up to much, but if you are looking for very basic accomodation, which is within walking distance to York centre (at a push), then this may be the place for you.
