“good location, dated hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

20 mins walk from York centre &10 mins from racecourse. Rooms are small and dated, we were in the lodge and bathroom was awkward for space. room did not have table or chairs and storage space was limited. Bar had a poor selection of beers but bar food was nice; dining room looked ok (we didn't use it). The hotel needs a full refit and in it's current state it should be well down your list

Do NOT stay here if your room is in the Lodge. Mine was dirty, dingy, depressing and shabby. The furniture would have been declined by any self respecting charity shop, and was not just dated but badly marked. There were cobwebs all over the walls which given their dark colour had been festering there for quite a while. The sockets were filthy, and so was the kettle. The lampshades were stained and the trims coming off. None of the bed linen fitted properly and a five year old could have cleaned this room and made the bed to a higher standard than the cleaning staff did. The net curtain was grey. Cups were rinsed but not washed and had tea stains. The shower corners were disgusting, and the grouting had black mould, and the shower was built on a platform about a foot high, making it very hard to get out of safely, with no grab rail.

Reception staff were completely disinterested - my guess is they know better than to ask if your stay has been satisfactory if you have the misfortune to stay in the Lodge. The main hotel, once quite grand, is also down at heel and shabby, although better than the Lodge.
They should be bloody well ashamed of themselves taking money for these dirty horrible rooms, and I have no hesitation in saying DO NOT STAY HERE. There's cheap and cheerful, and then there's cheap and nasty. And dirty. Yeuch.......

Dreadful. Truly Dreadful.

Room Tip: Don't stay here. Just don't. You will get a better room in ANY OTHER HOTEL!

When booking hotels I have a few musts on my list, cleanliness, spacious room and location. For me this hotel had none. The hotel itself looks ok from the outside but inside is another story. The room smelt musty, it was dirty and just wasn't for me.
My other half booked the room and his standards are A LOT lower than mine but even he said it was bad.
Stay here is you want cheap but personally I would rather pay a bit more somewhere nice or stay at home!

Had no problem what so ever with the location of the hotel it is just a 5 or 10 minute walk into the centre. Prior to us arriving at the hotel we rang to make sure we was in the main hotel building (not the lodge as we had read bad reviews) the receptionist was happy to do that for us. When arriving at the hotel the receptionist was fine, a bit bland but not rude, i must say all the members of staff apart from one young girl that worked through the day was rude, ignorant and confrontational as we asked to leave our bags for the day on the day we were checking out; although she did allow us to her response was not professional. The room looks bigger on the website and i have to agree it does need decorating it is very old fashioned and i suppoose some could say a bit dingy but it is a very old building. The floor boards are appauling every time you take a step or others take a step you can hear it (which is loud). The bathroom was reasonably clean but could smell something foisty which we then found out was the shower curtain (really needs washing) the water temperature is ridiculous you turn the tap slightly and you either freeze or burn basically. The facilities are just as expected; tea, coffe, sugar, milk etc but the cups were mucky and had to be washed before use. The rooms are red hot, the radiator right outside our door did not help on full blast all day and night. The furniture in the room could do with updating but i think thats supposed to be part of the 'old fashioned hotel', the walls had marks on and the windows were shabby. The bar was good apart from different members of staff charged different prices for the same drink-strange! It seemed that the room was a twin room and the beds had been pushed together; i know by working in a hotel myself that hotels do this but should charge less for the room. Overall we didnt have any major problems whilst staying at the hotel, would we stay there again? Possibly but will not be number one choice.

Room Tip: never saw a swimming pool or fitness centre and there are no signs etc.

Booked an overnight stay online based on the main advert for Elmbank Hotel & Lodge. Unfortunately it didn't state whether we would be in the Hotel or THE LODGE. Duly arrived at said hotel which from the outside, needs a serious makeover.....Went to Reception and were informed that we were in THE LODGE (across the road by the way) and were charged up front the princely sum of £84, this did not include breakfast which was an extra £8.50!!!!! On entering the lodge, it smelled as old as it was and God only knows when the last time a cleaner actually went in there and wiped the staircase down.
THE ROOM...
On opening the door to our room, I was shocked at the size of it......tiny as hell. Good job I hadn't brought the cat as he would have been disappointed....he does like to swing. The room appeared to be a converted cupboard that they had somehow squeezed a bed and bathroom into. At first I thought there was a window open but quickly realised that there wasn't....the frame was so old (original) that it didn't fit and I could actually see the road outside through the frame. Last decorated in 1970 it seems and the thinnest of walls.....swear blind I heard a mouse cough in the room next door. Very thin tired old mattress and the bed didn't even have a headboard, just pillows propped up against the wall. The drinking glasses were filthy and had to be washed before use.
THE BATHROOM...
No surprise when I tell you it was tiny. I could actually sit on the loo AND wash my hands at the same time....although to some, this may be a feature, it was not to me.
THE SHOWER...
Squeezed into the corner with a 9" step up to get into it..I kid you not. The shower head was obviously not the original and as such did not fit the retaining clip......and so duly fell off and hit me on the head 3 times ( and my missus twice). The towels had been laundered but had red stains on them....looked like old nail polish.

So now I understand why they took payment instantly.....I would have walked straight back out of the door and went elsewhere had they not!!!!

So, if after reading this and you still want to book the Elmbank, please ask them to specify if you will be in the main hotel or the quite disgusting Lodge

GOOD LUCK

This place was lovely! It has beautiful old style doors with keys. The facilities were suitable and the rooms were spacious. The staff were very helpful. Value for money. The location is a short walk from the main city centre with a quiet location.
