“Nice place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

We stayed here for 4 nights as a family and enjoyed our stay. The breakfast was very nice and had a very good selection and so was worth paying for in advance. We also ate in the restaurant at night times and found their buffet good value. Something for everyone on it.
The swimming pool is cold which is mentioned by other reviewers but it was nice to have the pool on site. The children also enjoyed the outdoor play area round the back of the hotel which is by the river.
The rooms were clean and tidy and the queen sized bed in the family room was comfortable. Not overly keen on the wood chip wallpaper though. I requested a room with a river view which are rooms at the back of the hotel. There was only a smallish window though and it was hard for the children to look out (4 and 7) without standing on the arm of the sofa - something I am sure many a child will have done. It's a shame though as it's a nice view.
We didn't have any problems with noise during our stay and enjoyed lie ins till around 9am as the curtains did a good job of blocking the light out.
Staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful. My only moan was that when we first checked in we didn't get the advertised children's welcome pack and had to ask for it later on. The welcome pack consisted of a soft zebra toy similar to the size you may get with a happy meal - the children liked it though.
The hotel is ideally situated near Clifford's Tower and the Castle Museum. It is a 15-20 minute walk into the town centre with young children depending on where you are going too.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are overlooking the river.

Just returned from a very short trip to York for half term and stayed here one night. The only reason we ended up here was we booked quite late and it was the only hotel with room availability which was fairly central. I think the trevelodge or Premier Inn would have had given us a broadly similar experience but at a far cheaper price.

The one thing which really p**ed me off was the lack of wi-fi. You are charged £9.99 for internet access but you have to get broadband via a cable- coone on down into the 21st century when most of us have iPads and don't carry a cable around with is, especially on holiday. Given that the hotel has a wii, Xbox and 2 stonking big IMacs in reception for guest use- you think it would cotton on to this fact- very very disappointing.

Other points:

- breakfast was fine, good selection of hot and cold items
- swimming pool was FREEZING
- short walk to centre of York although you have to walk along a very busy road to get there.
- executive room was ok - bit of style over substance. Separate loo meant you had to traipse to bathroom to wash hands. Sink was pretty to look at but no space to put your toiletries on. There was separate shower cubicle which was v small.
- pillows were small and uncomfortable
- no instructions on how to use coffee machine
- artex / wood chip walls unappealing

I wouldn't rush back.

Room Tip: All executive rooms are on the first floor and we had a view of a brick wall as we were at the back...

Good morning and thank you for your comments. I am sorry to read your review and the frustration caused by the lack of WIFI. We are currently serving notice to our current provider and WIFI will be available throughout the hotel at of middle of June. As you mentioned, broadband is accessible but on a wired basis and free access to internet is available from the IMacs stations is the lounge. Thank you very much for your review.

With kind regards,

My wife and I have just had 5 nights at the Novotel. It is the first time that we have stayed here but we had read up on trip advisor and gave it the benefit of doubt. The hotel it's self was very clean and tidy. The room was good with a separate loo to the bathroom which is different but nice as the loo can be used if someone is in the shower. It is only about 10-15 mins walk into town which makes it a good location for sight seeing. The only things that we were not happy with is the price of the food/drinks. A continental breakfast is £13.95 and another £3 on that if you wanted cooked breakfast. The items in the mini bar are just a rip off. (£1.50 for Pringles and that a very small tub.) We went to two different places to eat. For breakfast we went to Burks on Piccadilly. They are open from 08.00 to 18.00 weekdays. A full English is £5.95 and a good array of others.
For evening meal we went to The Masons Arms.(Turn left at the top of the road and follow along 5 mins walk on the left hand side of the road). The food is well priced and the quantity is large. If you only want a small meal ask for it as they will give you the most generous portions. They have a good selection of beers to chooses from and is a very friendly welcome.

Good afternoon and many thanks for taking the time to write a comment following your recent stay. Our breakfast (Full English) is priced at £13.95 but many offers are available when booking the room to get a discounted rate. Bed and breakfast packages are available at all times. I have also taken note of your comments with regards to the mini-bar prices. Thank you once again for your feedback.

With kind regards,

Decided to show the family York during half term. Stayed at Novotel York which had a very good special offer. Hotel was very family friendly and staff only too pleased to help. Hotel is within walking distance of city centre which was great. Left car in hotel car park so avoided need to find free car park space. Will definitely stay again when we return to York.

I am appalled to say that this hotel chain does not allow any more than 2 children in a room. I explained to a member of staff that one of my 3 children has Autism and learning difficulties and that he would not sleep at all and be extremely upset should we need two rooms and be split up, I was then offered a seperate room for my 12 and 5 year old!!!!!
This is outrageous, many many families have more than two children, even if he didn't have autism it is wrong to make families pay for two rooms!!!!!! I will not be recommending Novotel.

Room Tip: choose a room providing you have no more than 2 children!!!

Good morning. Thank you for your comments. I am obviously very surprised to read your review and will investigate further with our team. Our rooms are not designed to have 5 people sleeping in them and I can understand your frustration. Please do not hesitate to contact me on Christophe.Ughetto@accor.com should you wish to discuss the matter further and give me more details of your stay.

Thank you

This hotel is a good 15 min walk from the centre shops (with young kids) but less to the york museum and clifford's tower.
Reception is nice but totally manic in the evenings with kids running all over the place. There's a wii and ps? and small play area for younger children.
We didn't eat breakfast in the hotel but it did seem a bit pricy. We had the buffet in the restaurant one evening and it was really good.
Rooms big and totally fine.
All the staff were really nice, reception staff less interestex but bar and restaurant staff great.
Swimming pool is FREEZING!
This hotel is nothing to rave about but perfectly adequate for short break.

This was a family trip and one of the main reasons we booked it was it had a pool and seemed to be more family orientated than other hotels in York. We went to the hotel early and the lady on reception was very pleasant, I asked if our room was ready or alternatively for somewhere to leave our bags. She checked and said a family room was available and we could check in. A very quick and efficient check in. Our room was on the 4th floor and more than adequate for our stay. Bathroom very modern and bright and the toilet was separate. The room was very clean and quite modern with 2 single pull out sofa beds for children, we only have one child but could have been a little cramped if both beds had been pulled out and made up (not a problem when only 1 was pulled out). We went out for most of the day and a meal at teatime so was about 7.30pm when we went back to the hotel. The bar area was very busy with families but the hotel had drawing activities, games etc to entertain the children. We were not booked in for breakfast as our little girl just eats cereal on a morning & we took some with us & kept our milk in the mini fridge (me & hubby aren’t bothered about full English breakfast when away). We went down to the pool after 9 for a swim. The pool was quite small but not overly busy so it was fine however was extremely cold. Location was good about 10/15 minutes (with a small child) walk to the main shops / shambles. Overall really good and would definitely return for another family stay.

Room Tip: We had a family room on the 4th floor and it was more than adequate for our stay.
