“Excellent Stay In York”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

Having compared room rates on the usual websites we ended up booking a bed & breakfast AAA offer on BestWestern.com.
Firstly, though not at all the fault of Dean Court Hotel, we were unable to make use of their convenient complimentary valet parking ( car park charge £13.50 per 24 hours ). Reason being the confusing signage on approach to York city centre, restricted access routes monitored by Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras inspired us to park in The Shambles Q-Park ( £13.00 per 24 hours ) and walk to the hotel instead .
Our Sat Nav directed us to drive along the A64 / A1036 Station Road and over Lendal Bridge
but a sign said no access between 10.30am and 5pm, so we turned right and drove along hoping to find a way to our hotel. It seemed all entry points were restricted access during the day despite spending a good 40 minutes in heavy traffic circling around the outskirts. We thought we found a road that was open but it was restricted to buses and taxis also. So we gave up and parked up in a brightly lit multi-storey and took a walk.
There was no mention of these access difficulties on BestWestern.com or BWco.uk but to be fair to Dean Court Hotel, IT IS highlighted on their own BestWestern webpage. Had we seen this prior to travelling we would have known to proceed straight ahead onto Duncombe Place instead of turning right or left at Lendal Bridge. If so we could have used the valet parking, obviously this doesn't matter if arriving after 5.00/5.30.
At least we spotted the sign and won't have a £60 fine.

The Q-Park is around 8 minutes walk from the hotel.

OK after all that, to Dean Court Hotel itself.
On entering the lobby we were greeted with a really nice smile from the desk clerk, she was both efficient and friendly and explained about the breakfast times etc,
We were joined by a similarly nice gentleman offering help with our bags, he led us to our room, pointing out the location of elevator, restaurants, bar, etc, and explained about the free wi -fi with password. A very nice welcome.
The room itself was spotlessly clean, very nicely decorated, and very well appointed. The bathroom was very bright and modern with good quality soaps and suchlike. The tv reception was faultless with a good choice of channels, plus a DVD player with optional film rentals.
There was an in-room safe and a refreshment tray with plenty of milk, sugar, coffee, tea, biscuits. The bed was fine. The wi -fi reception excellent.
We booked a small double, and this was accurately described. It was small, but not too small.
We noted we had not received a " free room upgrade " which being Best Western Diamond Elite members we normally expect, but to be fair, in the UK this is not unusual, unlike Canada and the US where it is always honoured graciously. We did not mention it at all, so it goes.
We were very happy with our room.
We visited the restaurant for breakfast and were met by a really nice friendly breakfast staff, seating us at the window overlooking the Minster, and telling us to study the menu because the breakfast was " really fantastic ". It was !!!
A large range of fruit, juices, cereals, milk, etc to start, with coffee, tea, toast to follow, then your choice from the breakfast menu. We chose the full English breakfast and it was very well presented, well cooked and very good quality.
A very good breakfast experience, especially from all the staff, the girls, the lady and the gentleman. You couldn't help overhear how other guests were served, they work really hard to make a very nice start to your day. Nothing was too much trouble.
On returning to our room our keys had stopped working so I went to reception and this was resolved instantly, again by really friendly staff.
With regard to the location, it was perfect for us.
The Minster is directly across the street, Guy Fawkes Inn ( have to on Nov 5th ! ) around the corner, The Shambles a short walk away, as are the market, a Wetherspoons, the main shops and everything else. We walked to the National Railway Museum within around half an hour and took a walk to The Black Swan Inn, a 15th century inn with particularly relevant interest to Canadians being the former home of the parents of General James Wolfe of Quebec, but worth visiting just for the beer.

So to sum up, we really enjoyed our stay at Dean Court Hotel and will definitely come back next time we visit York. Now we know how the roads work we may even make it for dinner at D.C.H. as we originally intended had not York council planners made entering the city centre by car so challenging.

Thank you Dean Court Hotel !

On previous trips to York, I've often walked passed the Dean Court Hotel on my way to the Minster area. I had some serious shopping to do so decided to make the most of it and book a night. It was a very good choice - lovely staff, great location and, although my room was on the small side, it had everything I needed. The breakfast was first class. All in all it was very good value. I will definitely be making more visits to Dean Court.

This is probably the best hotel in city for location, for the first item visitors the hotel is superbly placed right next door to the minster meaning you should never get lost.

The hotel itself has great modern rooms with free Wi-Fi and high quality toiletries, a top notch restaurant serving very tasty food – especially the full English breakfasts. Many of York’s great bars, coffee shops and theatres are close by all within walking distance.

The Dean Court is one of the most expansive hotels in York but it is also one of the best.

The hotel incorporates several buildings into one, which makes it quirky and atmospheric although access to some areas may be tricky for people with mobility problems. I have stayed in 7 different York hotels over the past few years and this is my favourite because of its plush but unstuffy atmosphere and its unbeatable location right in the centre of town. In spite of this I have not found it noisy at night (other than the minster early-evening bell-ringing practice, which is actually rather nice!) On both of my two stays so far I have been upgraded from my booked single room into a small double, which is a good size for one person but would be small for two people for more than a night or two. The staff on the whole are professional and approachable and some are extremely personable. My only grouse this time was that I asked for the same items from the bistro menu on two consecutive nights, only to be told that they were not available. I heard another lady ordering something else, which was also not available. Otherwise I was totally happy and will definitely stay again when next in York.

Room Tip: If you have mobility problems check that your room will be accessible by lift.

Lovely hotel. Friendly, helpful staff. Excellent breakfast. Great room overlooking the Minster and St Michael-le-Belfrey. So central and so convenient for the city and all the sights. And so much to watch happening just outside the window - street drama one day and a marathon the next. We were not disturbed by noise at all and the room was very comfortable - although starting to look a little worn in places. Very useful having the valet parking - you certainly don't need a car to explore York. We would definitely stay again.

I have to say i only booked this hotel after reading so many excellent reviews of the Deancourt Hotel. So i did have high expectations...On arriving in Room 15 The Holgate suite, me and my husband were delighted to see how lovely the room was. They even added the extra touch of rose petals on the bed and an anniversary card. we also had a stunning view of the Minster. Everything was perfect ( although the floor boards are very creeky ) but this didnt really bother us. You cant get much closer to the centre of York and everything is accessable. The reason im giving this hotel 4 stars is that i came home absolutely shattered. I didnt sleep very well in the hotel bed, neither did my husband. To sit on it was lovely and soft, but during the night it felt like the bed was lob sided and i was leaning to the edge of the bed. we both had to have an afternoon nap in between sight seeing, and im only 32. The staff was very friendly and helpful esp the french guy who took our breakfast order ( didnt know his name ). My husband is very fussy and always has milky coffee. Wherever we go staff in cafes, restaurants etc always bring him a latte. At the Deancourt hotel he knew exactly what we meant and made the coffee perfectly, Nothing was too much trouble. The food at breakfast was to die for which set you up for the day and had a wide selection of cereals, juice, fruit etc on the buffet. I would deffinately recommend this hotel and would stay here again.
