“Good and Bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2011

We stayed at this hotel, for 3 nights, as part of our Honeymoon. First the good part, excellent friendly staff. Good food and absolutely ideal for visiting York, it is only a ten minute walk into the city centre with all its attractions. It was easy to find and provided an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area as well as the city itself.
Now the bad bit. The room we stayed in was small, the bed uncomfortable and the bathroom tiny. There was almost no room to move in the shower. We where situated between the busy main road and the reception area. Each morning we were awoken by the sound what seemed a change of staff as the door to the reception banged loudly several times, at 6am.
The food was good but the menu didn't change. Considering the cost of our stay >£800 for 3 nights this left a sour taste.
To summarise, want to visit York? stay here DO NOT GET STUCK IN ROOM 9

Room Tip: Do NOT get stuck in room 9

For a hotel restaurant to have 2 rosettes you would expect the food to be half decent,
1) starter of smoked salmon , beetroot and horseradish......looked pretty , very small portion , raw beetroot, tried to hard with this dish and ruined it
2) soup, tomato,,,,, was as if the chef had opened a tin of chopped tomatoes poured it in a pan and heated it up, it had not been passed so contained seeds and skin, not what you would expect from a two rosette establishment.
3)main courses ok but again nothing special, desserts again very small and not very inspiring.
4) gents toilets down stairs were disgusting, looked like they hadnt been cleaned for weeks.
5) watch out for the add ons and the 10% discretionary charge, this really winds me up,i feel 95% of customers would feel embarrassed to ask for it to be refunded on their bill, i feel it is my perogative to leave a tip and not to be half forced to.

overall not a very good visit and shall not be returning in a hurry, we ate at the churchill hotel oppisite the week before it was cheaper , better value for money and worthy of its two rosette accolade

I stayed here earlier this year with my husband as part of our honeymoon. We were upgraded to a lovely 4 poster room and there was a card waiting or us which was a lovely touch (we have learned my brother phoned to let them know we were on honeymoon). The room was very nice, en-suite bathroom with both bath and separate shower was clean and tidy. The tv at the foot of the bath was greatly appreciated for relaxing baths after long walks around York.

Staff were all very friendly and helpful. We arrived by train and were at the hotel early, our bags were taken and kept safe for us until the room was ready. In the meantime we were given a helpful map and enjoyed the short walk into the centre for lunch. On the day we left we also left bags at the hotel after check out as our train wasn't leaving until later in the afternoon. The receptionist was very helpful and called a taxi for us when we returned to pick up our bags.

The breakfasts were excellent, good selection of cereals, fruit, yoghurts etc and the cooked options were delicious and plentiful. We had dinner at the grill downstairs one evening and the steak was very good. The restaurant was very cosy, staff again were helpful without being intrusive.

The hotel made a perfect, relaxing base for our holiday. The lounge was comfy and inviting and I thoroughly recommend taking time to sit with a cup of tea before bed. We both slept well as the beds were comfy and the rooms quiet. We would definitely go back if visiting York again.

Stayed here for 2 nights, had adjoining twin rooms. Both bedrooms were really nice - clean bathrooms, nice decor and lots of tea bags, coffee etc. Had extra pillows in the cupboard plus mini fridge - lots of nice little details that can make or break your experience. We were at the front above the road but did not hear a peep from the traffic - free parking at the back of the hotel is limited but we had no trouble getting a space. You can easily walk to York city centre, its just down the road, about 10 minutes. The staff were lovely - very helpful and polite, especially the receptionist and the "older" porter guy (sorry didn't get his name but he was lovely - so helpful and even gave us a bit of history of the hotel) We also ate in one night - boy it was good! The puddings were to die for! Also very reasonable prices. Service very good in there too. All in all I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel - I would definately go back, one of my all time favourite hotels (and I am very, very fussy when it comes to hotels!!)

Room Tip: The front were we stayed was very quiet even though there was a road right outside

We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Grange, very welcoming and comfortable, without any hint of 'customer care' training by rote. We were particularly impressed that the hotel worked so smoothly when accommodating both our party of around 30 and a wedding. Loved the racing theme and especially 'trompe l'oeil' decor in the dining room.
Just one marked glass at dinner on Saturday evening - after serving the wedding breakfast - and scarcity of vegetables followed by a surfeit - possibly because so many of us had chosen steak - so may be worth considering when setting such a menu? Also, some noise from the Butler's Pantry outside Room 10 when staff were serving the wedding party in the Library/Drawing Room. Cotton wool pads and sewing kit would have been appreciated - otherwise room and bathroom spotless, comfortable, well presented and equipped.
We didn't enjoy the noise (makes hearing for older people difficult) and crush in the Cellar Bar for our pre-drinks on Saturday evening and assume that staff attempting to serve others would have preferred not to have had us blocking their thoroughfare. More worryingly, the use of tea lights at dado rail level presented a risk in such a crowd - either of damage to clothing from getting too close when avoiding staff passing through and others passing-by, or worse, a fire risk if accidentally knocked off - so I extinguished quite a few.
Management has replied promptly to feedback about this risk and from our experience feedback from others about breakfast has been heeded - we were asked to wait in the Morning Room to be called and our 'cooked' order was taken promptly with that for choice of beverage and toast. Smoked haddock came with two perfectly poached eggs, good sized portion of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and components of fried breakfast. Plenty of choice from the cold table, including cold meats, cheese, pastries, juices, bottled water, yoghurt and fresh fruit - though to be ultra picky orange and grapefruit slices would have been better minus their pith and pips.
We overheard some grumbling about the car park but were unaffected, having taken a holiday from motoring too - the station is a manageable and attractive walk via a short cut across the river, thereby avoiding all busy streets and traffic - otherwise taxi was a reasoable £5 considering very long traffic queues as we arrived - perhaps the City Fathers should consider requiring everyone to Park and Ride, if not walk?
None of this really detracted from our guest experience and we shall certainly consider returning.

We are watching a programme about trip adviser whilst in our room at the Grange Hotel! We really have appreciated fantastic service in a lovely hotel. We can't understand the reviews about breakfast - which we thought was excellent and we very much enjoyed our meal in the Ivy this evening. Staff have been excellent and we would definitely come again. I loved the television in the bathroom! Rooms were serviced beautifully with a proper tea pot and fresh milk. Hotel was recommended by a friend who lives
In York and we would thoroughly agree!

Thank you for taking the time to place your review on TripAdvisor.

I am very pleased to read of how enjoyable your stay has been and the level of service, hospitality and cuisine met with your approval. As much as we (the team) hate to admit it regrettably from time to time we do fail to maintain the level of high standards we inspire to meet.

I hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you again to The Grange in the very near future.

We were looking forward to a short break in the beautiful city of York from22nd to 24th October 2011. The city lived up to its promise, however, our booking of The Grange Hotel can only generously be described as ‘unfortunate’.
Clearly there are in fact two ‘Shambles’ in York… this hotel is one of them.
Following a three and a half hour drive we arrived to find there were no available parking places… something that helped to convince us to book this hotel as parking in York is at a premium. The hotel management were of no assistance whatsoever… just a discourteous shrug to indicate that this is something of a recurring problem.
Yet this hotel boasts free parking as one of its differentiating features. Not , however, surprising as the car park has capacity for just 20 vehicles whereas the hotel has 32 rooms and a public restaurant which from the street proudly also invites patrons to make use of the ‘free parking’.
Notwithstanding, all of the surrounding roads are permit parking only with no return within one hour… so we were advised to go to a shoppers car park (not free) or to leave our vehicle at York City Football ground… you can guess my response.
For the rest of it, the hotel is very tired, staff and service apparently even more tired, and catering way below average.
If you are contemplating staying in York… avoid ‘The Grange’.

Room Tip: Find one in another hotel...

Dear Guests

I read with great interest your only review on TripAdvisor.

Labelling The Grange as Shambles because we could not accommodate your car is unfair and frankly unjustifiable. In all the media including our own website we state the following; “there is a free private hotel car park available for residents at the rear of the hotel. Please note that spaces are limited and available on a first come first served basis” Reserving a hotel bedroom does not automatically guarantee you a car park space.

As to the discourteous staff comment I am struggling to even picture one of the team who could fit the criteria. I am also struggling to associate your statement relating to the management team as there are only three managers and I am one of them and as I was the duty manager over the aforementioned weekend I do not recall the incident.

I also wish to personally invite you to elaborate on your comments relating to our hospitality and cuisine as rest assured I will thoroughly investigate any shortfalls. My email address is gm@grangehotel.co.uk

I look forward to hearing from you.
