Based upon the recommendation of our B & B host, we dined on our first evening in the ancient walled city of York at The Hole in the Wall, which is located only a few steps within the walled portion of York, close to the famous York Minster. The pub is very efficient, taking no reservations and having patrons seat themselves. One orders drinks at the bar and pays at the time of the order and orders dinner at an order counter, again paying at the time of the order. The order is then brought to your small round table with soda fountain-type seats. Our wine orders, a white from South Africa and a red from Chile were nice wines, reasonably priced. My wife's Cajun chicken was delicious, while my pesto crusted salmon filet was just so-so, Her chips were also quite good, while my new potatoes and vegetables were unexceptional. The pub ambiance is quite charming.
