“Lovely pub!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

Lovely homely atmosphere with traditional pub grub. Good choice of cask ales, nice friendly service. Couldn't ask for more really.

“A gem inside & out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

Here's another ancient York pub with its own ghost inside and a nifty-looking snickleway outside.

We came for dinner because of its expansive menu and its reputation as a fun place to dine. (Both the ghost story and the menu can be found on its website)

The three of us enjoyed lamb with redcurrent sauce & mash; beef pot pie; and a kings steak with pepper sauce along with three glasses of wine, a beer and a coke. The bill came to 37 GBP.

The pub is older than dirt with a ton of atmosphere and a very friendly staff. We dined there twice because it was so enjoyable.

Before entering the pub for dinner, we went past the entrance about 20 feet and turned right into a snickleway called Little Peculiar Lane. It is celebrated as one of the shortest snickleways in the city and you come out into a courtyard with a stunning view of the Minster overhead. It makes for a very interesting photo of the cathedral.

“Good Food & Beer”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

Nice pub with a good range of food & beer, get there early as it fills up quick but as the staff told us there is a quick turnover which means tables do free up... be patient and enjoy ;-)

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013 via mobile

4 friends looking for good food and a good pint unfortunately got neither! Been in the pub before but first time eating there. Looked at the menu which was vast, decided on steak and ale pie, lamb and mint pie, steak suet pudding and red pepper and goats cheese pasta. All sounds delicious so we thought. Soggy pastry, lack of meat, and very poor pasta dish. Washed down with a rather flat lager. Did complain about the drinks and the glasses were changed and topped up by the rather abrupt bar staff. We will not be returning to that pub. There are lots of eating places in York which we have tried many and many we have returned too this place will not be one of then.
